Raees helps Imtiaz Sait reach a rare landmark

By: Frankel   October 13 , 2018

Imtiaz Sait trained Raees was brilliantly ridden by jockey C S Jodha to prevail in a tight finish in the 3200 metres Suresh Mahindra Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Pune races. Jodha was persevering on Raees who had to fight a determined battle with Vulcan and then stave off the late-rallying Frivolous to land the spoils. The victory was a special one for trainer Imtiaz Sait who got the distinction of becoming the first trainer in Western India to saddle 2000 winners in his long and productive career.

The race has an open look about it with three of the four horses in the fray in active betting. After Square Moon led the field till turning for home and then gave way for Vulcan, the battle for supremacy became intense with Raees joining the issue. The two fought a stiff battle before Vulcan weakened inside the final 100 metres. Raees shot ahead and then gamely held on as Frivolous finished with a rattle. Frivolous who lost some ground at the start, warmed up to the task very well but the winning post came too soon for the Yash Narredu ridden five-year-old. Incidentally, the ill-judged race that Jodha had ridden on Raees on the previous occasion had earned the jockey six-month suspension and the Pune Derby was under threat as the jockeys protested the suspension. The better-quality ride given this time out may not help Jodha`s cause much in the appeal but the charge of not permitting the horse to run on merits may come up for consideration in the appeal board.

Jockey P S Chouhan was in the limelight booting home three well-fancied winners. Lorraine who had won a race and then subsequently was disqualified for a breach of medication rules was running without penalty against the highly hyped Natalma in the 1400 metres Sir Sultan Chenoy Trophy (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Natalma was strongly backed to win the race based on expectations which a horse from trainer Pesi Shroff always commands. In the event, Lorraine who shot ahead in the final furlong broke clear and Natalma could only plod home into the second position. Godsword placed third. Shiraz Sunderji trained Intense Stylist had recorded such an outstanding win last time out that it was hard to find anyone matching strides with him in the upper division of the race. Intense Stylist won as expected, swamping the opposition by a widening margin of seven lengths over Timeless Deeds and Angels Harmony.

Malesh Narredu trained Enchanted was spiritedly backed to record a hat-trick of wins which saw the odds on the more deserving Poker Face shoot up in the 1000 metres FA & KA Irani Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Enchanted put up a poor show and was never in the hunt. Chouhan had Poker Face assume command going into the final furlong and the fancied runner bounced clear of Slam Dunk to record an easy win. Gold Field ran on to take the third position.

The lucrative treble for the Jaydev Mody colours began in the first race of the day itself with Nirad Kranjawala trained Zanzibar building on the forward effort of last time to take the opposition in its stride in the 1600 metres Hills And Stars Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Artus was second while Gold Magic staved off favourite Hope And Glory to save place money.

Trevor Patel drove out Vishal Gaikwad trained Masterofbalantrae to a resolute win in the 1400 metres Ashwamedha Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Masterofbalantrae stormed ahead inside the final furlong to record an easy win over Star of Thea and Queen Credible.

Adhiraj Singh Jodha trained Tassawur won the 1600 metres N K Padumjee Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds in the Stewards room after losing the battle by a whisker to favourite Mystic Flame on the track. Mystic Flame went on to Tassawur under pressure and hampered the progress of the latter in the closing stages of the race. Since the verdict was so close, it was clear that Sandesh`s objection against Trevor for interference would find favour with the Stewards. Grand Chieftain was third more than five lengths behind.

Narendra Lagad trained horses always have the knack of springing nasty surprises especially in the races meant for horses in the lowest category. 10 to 1 shot Dance of Fire won the 1200 metres Animal Welfare Board of India Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 4 to 30 in a close finish from late-finishing Dusky Siren and Julio Cesaro. Jockey Umesh was astride the winner. The lower division of the race went the way of the heavily supported Royston Rock from the stables of trainer Mansoor Shah. Jockey Zeeshan had no problem in steering Royston Rock clear of the rest. With a late charge, Bay of Love got the second place from Shakin Stevens.
