Paprika proves superior in Brahmananda Reddy Cup

By: Tippu Sultan   November 18 , 2018

Vittal Deshmukh trained Paprika floored the opposition in the 1200 metres Kasu Brahmananda Reddy Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 74 and above, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races. The long shot adopted a catch me if you can tactics and found the post ahead of late-finishing That`s My Class and Dance Oh Dance to land the spoils for apprentice jockey Afroz Khan. The day`s races did not run kindly for punters who struggled to pick a winner. Interestingly, champion jockey Akshay Kumar did not have a single winner for the day which is a rare happening since the last two seasons.

Breezeofthesouth was widely fancied to win the feature event. Paprika who was drawn on the wide outside rolled over to the rails showing plenty of speed. Luckily, the inward swing did not prove dangerous as Paprika was well ahead. Paprika settled down to lead the field by many lengths and though she was beginning to find the last moments of the race taxing, she managed to stay out the trip ahead of the rest. Three horses finished in close order with favourite Breezeofthesouth getting the fourth position.

Srinivas Reddy trained Mon General showed readiness to win on debut in the 1100 metres Hidden Bloom Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds. Ashhad Asbar took Mon General on a successful start to finish mission. The heavily backed Aon Aon Aon ran green and was inclined to run out. However, jockey Akshay Kumar had him in control but the favourite did not look capable of toppling the front-runner. Aon Aon Aon even lost the runner-up berth to the late-finishing Tough Lady.

Srinath drove out Shezad Abbas trained Kingswood to victory in the 1600 metres Democracy Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. King Maker attempted to win from the word `go` and had a good break over the rest but inside the final furlong was tackled by Kingswood who stormed ahead. Favourite Wave Rider made a late dash under the strong riding of Akshay Kumar, but Kingswood had enough cushion to see through the challenge. Kings Maker stayed on to take the third position.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Bradfield College obliged huge expectations in the 1600 metres Srinivasa Sadagopa Sharma Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Bradfield College raced a handy second till the top of the straight before taking over the running. The horse began to drift alarmingly even as Big Brave showed up on the inside. Though the favourite gave a scare to his supporters with jockey Prashanth Debe unable to correct the drift, Bradfield College had enough stamina to last out the trip comfortably on the edge of the outer rail. Big Brave was second ahead of Brave Warrior. Prasad Raju trained Staridar proved too good in the lower division of the race. Staridar led from the start and skipped clear in the final furlong. Jockey Nilesh Rawal took it easy towards the closing stages of the race by easing up the horse unmindful of the fact that Alta Vita was finishing on strongly. The lead was good enough to see Staridar home. His Excellency necked out Spicy to grab the third position. Favourite Naucratis was never in the hunt.

Apprentice jockey Afroz Khan who appears to be the pick of the newly apprenticed jockeys now, had a double for the day as apart from Paprika, he also guided the well-backed Sweetie Pie to an easy win in the 1100 metres Soviet Star Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Afroz had Sweetie Pie dictate the pace from the start and the fancied runner bounced clear in the final furlong to go beyond the reach of the rest to win by a margin of over three lengths. Thundering ran on to take the second position ahead of Vallee Bloomer.

Ravinder Singh trained Sefarina brought off a big upset in the concluding race of the day, the 1200 metres Kinnerasani Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30. Jockey Ajit Singh took Sefarina on a start to finish mission and the front-runner looked vulnerable as Moonwalker closed with a rush but the long shot had enough legs to pull away. Ultimate Risk covered enormous ground in the closing stages of the race to finish second ahead of the favourite.
