Vittal Deshmukh reaches a new milestone

By: Tippu Sultan   November 26 , 2018

Srinivas Reddy trained Ashwa Bahula had the credentials to win the 1200 metres Sri Shamlal Gupta Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 42 to 62, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Ashwa Bahula readily justified the favouritism with a strong run down the final furlong which put paid to the hopes of the late-rallying Sarvatra. Trainer Vittal Deshmukh bounced back to old ways by saddling five winners after running a rough patch in the last few seasons. Jockey Sandesh was associated with four of these wins.

Vittal Deshmukh who has won most classics among the current lot of trainers in Hyderabad, reached a new milestone of saddling 1000 winners when Egyptian Prince won the last race of the day.

Ashwa Bahula`s last run in the monsoon season was indicative of the fact that he would be in the winner`s circle soon. The opportunity presented itself in the feature event. The only possible threat that one could envisage was in the form of Sarvatra who was being guided by the champion jockey Akshay Kumar who incidentally is India`s nominee for the Mauritius International racing to be held over the weekend. Jockey Ashhad Asbar brought the favourite into reckoning in the final furlong after laying in waiting in the third position as Arc of History and Warrior Supreme held the advantage. Ashwa Bahula readily responded to the urgings and stormed ahead. Sarvatra came home with a big effort only to find that the front-runner was in the safety zone. Warrior Supreme held off Arc of History for the third position. The latter reportedly burst her blood vessels.

Satyanarayana trained Indian Dreams was heavily supported to win the lower division of the Shamlal Gupta trophy but the favourite faltered close to home. Mandy who had the requisite form pounced on the favourite in the closing stages of the race and managed to clinch the issue in the final strides of the race thanks to the driving finish of jockey Sandesh. Buddy Brothers got the third place ahead of the fancied Diggers who after being prominent, weakened to go out of contention.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Handsome Boy had been the victim of a poor ride given by raw apprentice in his last run. He readily made amends in the 1200 metres Silver Dagger Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Sandesh produced Handsome Boy very early in the straight to take charge and the favourite kept the fancied Marina Del Rey at bay to record an easy win. Ashka Ashka Ashka ran on to finish third. Apprentice jockey Praveen Gaddam drove out fancied Thundering to victory in the lower division of the race. The Vittal Deshmukh trainee hit the front from the start and was so far ahead of the rest that he could easily tackle the challenge of Ice Crystal and favourite Snow Castle. Thundering reportedly bled through her right nostril.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Consigliori appeared well prepared to strike on debut in the 1200 metres Cabaret Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds. The one-sided betting was not misplaced as the favourite encountered no resistance from the rest en route to an easy win. Midnight Dream was second while Sporting Smile was third a distance behind the runner-up which itself indicated the fact that a backward lot of horses were taking on a well-prepared horse.

It was a day dominated by one stable. Another horse from Vittal Deshmukh, Egyptian Prince had run a forward race in his debut run. Taking on a weak lot of horses in the 1600 metres Blue Bid Plate, a race for horses rated up to 30, Egyptian Prince asserted his supremacy inside the final 100 metres to win by a widening margin of three lengths over Flowersfromabrook. Eau Claire necked out Nazariya to save place money. Moka ran below expectations. Akshay Kumar`s lone win for the day was obtained in the lower division of the race. Lesser fancied Stormy took all the openings that he got in the final furlong to come into strong contention and then held off Parizaat to land the spoils. Madonna nosed out Golden Xanthus to get the third position.

From the sixth position at the final bend, Arjun Anne trained Semper Fidelis got a good run along the rails before being angled out in the final furlong to get past the front-running Alexander The Great to record an easy win in the 1400 metres Dr S R Captain Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Jockey Kuldeep Singh rode a good opportunistic race on the winner. Favourite Vashishta had all the chances but could not produce that bit extra to make a difference to the outcome of the race and settled for the second place. The horse had been reportedly sent to the veterinary hospital to be gelded but was sent back without the procedure as one of the partners was against the operation. Royal Avenger managed to keep the third position ahead of Drogan by a narrow margin.
