Automatic pulls it off in cluster finish

  December 20 , 2018

Irfan Ghatala trained Automatic who has been a transformed horse after he was gelded, recorded his second straight win when staving off Ultimate Warrior and a host of other horses while claiming the 1600 metres Dr M A M Ramaswamy Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Thursday`s Bangalore races. The results of as many as four races were decided by the skin of the teeth of the respective winners.

Automatic had won over a trip of seven furlongs which may not have anticipated because he had faltered time and again after giving hopes. He was also running within a short span of being gelded. However, Automatic managed to pull it off. This time out he was backed with conviction to repeat in a competitive field, with Ultimate Warrior shaping as his main threat based on his previous performances. Apprentice jockey M Naveen took Ultimate Warrior on a start to finish mission and the lesser fancied runner was not inclined to give it up easily as he put up a dogged resistance. He drifted out under pressure in the closing stages of the race which could have possibly hurt his chances as the verdict was only a neck. Booker Jones and Automatic on the wide outside flashed home with telling strides. Automatic who finished the fastest got the nod. Ultimate Warrior retained the runner-up ahead of Booker Jones. Star Carnation was a close fourth while Sagrada was another neck behind in the fifth position. Suraj Narredu was at his persevering best on the winner.

Mystic Flame who had been relocated to the stables of Parvati Byramji stables from the yard of Pesi Shroff was completely ignored in the betting ring for the 1600 metres O M Lingappa Silver Bar Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Velocidad who had good credentials was made the favourite while surprisingly Kashkha who had won last time out but with several niggles was well supported as the second favourite. Mystic Flame had won a race at Pune beating Tasawwur but had lost the race in the Stewards room. Jockey Irvan Singh had Mystic Flame in a forward position and the long shot broke clear in the final furlong. Velocidad took a long time to pick up momentum and by the time he came home with a big effort, the winning post was desperately close. Despite all-out efforts by Suraj Narredu, Velocidad had to concede defeat to Mystic Flame by a whisker. Play Safe who led from the start and finished a close third could be seen to advantage next time out.

Both the divisions of the Kolar Plate produced an absorbing finish, with the winner separated by a whisker. Armenia was the betting rage in the upper division of the race with noticeable support for top-weighted Spirit Bruce. The race had several twists and turns, with Santiago and Apollo Bay shaping to cause a big upset. Closer home, Armenia appeared to have the edge. However, Spirit Bruce who graced the tail end at the final turn responded to the powerful riding of jockey Akshay Kumar and managed to head Armenia at the post to bring off a thrilling win. Santiago was an impressive third. The lower division of the race saw a big touch being brought off on Neil Darashah trained Mariachi. Mariachi who had a none too impressive debut run in the summer season, was backed to the exclusion of the rest. Super Success had her share of supporters. Mariachi led from the start and held off the spirited challenge of Superb Success who under a hard drive by Akshay Kumar responded well but fell short by a whisker in the end. Jockey T S Jodha rode the winner. Superb Success took time to respond and by the time she warmed up to the task, the favourite had a winnable lead. Great Celebration necked out I Do What I Do to get the third position.

With Mercury being a non-starter on veterinary grounds, the 1100 metres Gumbaz Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35, was at the mercy of Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Charmed Life. Last start winner Benediction led from the start but caved in when Charmed Life essayed a strong challenge in the stretch. Charmed Life went away to win by a margin of four lengths. Prazsky saved place money staving off First Step. Satish Narredu trained Stars In His Eyes won the lower division of the race at nourishing odds. Stars In His Eyes had reasonable credentials but the presence of jockey Khurshad Alam perhaps was the reason not many were inclined to go with the gelding`s chances especially since he had let down in the past. In the event, Tudor Place led going into the final furlong but as he has always done, he began to slacken in the final stages of the race. Stars In His Eyes came home with a rush to record an easy win. Simply Magical who received big support, was a tame third. Odyssey played up at the gates and was withdrawn from the fray.

The well-backed Md Khan trainee Another Rainbow recorded an emphatic win in the 1200 metres Agumbe Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Hunters Moon shaped to win but closer home was beaten by the sustained burst of speed shown by Another Rainbow. Favourite Fierce Fighter was a total let down, being sluggish at the gates and being a lost cause thereafter.
