Blue Bell picks the Golconda Oaks with ease

By: Tippu Sultan   January 7 , 2019

Vishal Gaikwad trained Blue Bell had no problem in accounting for a modest lot of horses in the Gr 2 Golconda Oaks, the third classic of the season, run on Sunday at Malakpet. The daughter of Paco Boy had only three opponents to tackle and among them, only one, Nimble Mind had some worthwhile record of having won thrice against local opponents and was expected to offer a semblance of resistance to the horse from Mumbai.

Once More led the field and dictated a slow pace followed by Miss Lilly, Blue Bell and Nimble Mind. The order remained the same until turning for home at which point both the fancied duo from the back began to essay their challenge. Jockey Leigh Roche had Blue Bell take charge by the final furlong and the got-abroad filly spurted clear and was in no danger of being caught up by Nimble Mind who tried hard but was found wanting. Miss Lilly was third while the pace-setter Once More weakened to finish a dismal fourth.

The 1200 metres T Chandrashekar Reddy Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 74 and above, had an open look about it with half a dozen horses having a realistic chance of pulling it off. This was reflected in the open nature of betting. The speedy Paprika led the field deep into the straight before being overwhelmed by Dance Oh Dance. Tanwar then had Dance Oh Dance spurt into what turned out to be a winning lead. That`s My Class produced a strong burst of speed and came home with a rush only to find the winning post coming a wee bit early. Dance Oh Dance held on to win by half a length for trainer Laxman Singh at odds of 6 to 1. Leading Legend was a suggestive third.

Donald Netto trained Holy Healer brought off an upset in the 1100 metres Peddapalli Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Favourite Kamyar shot ahead in the final furlong and had an edge over Palsy Walsy who was being driven hard by jockey Akshay Kumar. In the meanwhile, Holy Healer who had jumped out wide at the start, improved places on the wide outside and flew home to collar the favourite in the closing stages of the race to provide apprentice jockey R S Jodha with the first winner of his career. Palsy Walsy headed Kamyar at the post to grab the runner-up berth. Sequeira trained One One One came in for big support in the lower division of the race. Shakespeare went in front at breakneck speed which was to prove his undoing when the race came to the boil in the final furlong. One One One who was initially outpaced, covered ground in the straight and was angled out in the final 100 metres to get a clear run. The favourite devoured ground in the hands of apprentice jockey Koushik to win the race in great style from Baywatch Babe who was shaping to be a serious threat. Latest News was third while Shakespeare weakened to finish fourth. The latter was ridden by five-kg claimer Afroz who has been enjoying good success in his first season, but he has to make effort to learn pace judgment.

Faisal Hassan trained La Mer who had failed to justify favouritism on the last occasion, obliged in the 1200 metres Bonzer Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Jockey Akshay Kumar who guided the fortunes of the fancied runner this time out, had La Mer lead the pack with Rapid Fire in close attendance. Favourite Proclamation struggled for speed and was in the rear end of the field. La Mer shook off the challenge of Rapid fire in the final furlong and stormed clear to win the race with a measure of comfort. Blue Empress was third many lengths behind. Something seemed to be bothering Proclamation who ended up a dismal last.

Laxman Singh trained Tetra Rama and Monte Rei who had the benefit of a race run were both strongly backed to win the 1400 metres Trade Fair Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Jockey Akshay Kumar had Tetra Rama lead from the start and the got abroad stormed clear of the rest in the final furlong to record an impressive win. Magnetosphere occupied the second place ahead of Royal Ruby while Monte Rei struggled for speed and finished a tame fourth. Satheesh trained Sporting Smile won the lower division of the race in dramatic fashion. The lesser fancied runner Sporting Smile led from the start with favourite Yours Forever in the chase. Inside the final furlong, Yours Forever overhauled the front-runner and opened up a lead of about four lengths. Jockey Nakhat Singh kept persevering with Sporting Smile who came up with a second wind and managed to beat the favourite in the final moments of the race. Ice Warrior finished on strongly to be an impressive third.

Ravinder Singh trained Royal Style won the 1600 metres Common Land Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated up to 30 at long odds. After Silver Dollar attempted runaway tactics and faltered, Royal Style took over the running inside the final 200 metres and stormed clear. Favourite Nazariya took a long time to warm up and though the four-year-old finished with a big burst, Royal Style had enough cushion to reach the safety of the post. Dhool Ka Pool was third.
