Into The Spotlight pulls it off in RWITC Trophy

  January 19 , 2019

Padmanabhan trained Into The Spotlight whose last effort on this track was an impressive win in the summer season, managed to put behind the poor run at Chennai over seven furlongs and staved off the strong bid by favourite Diamond Rays in the 1200 metres RWITC Trophy, a handicap race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races.

Diamond Rays could have been the possible winner but just as he got the measure of the front-runner burst his blood vessels which had a bearing on his performance. Into The Spotlight fought back in the hands of jockey David Allan to snatch the verdict.

The market trend indicated a close fight between Diamond Rays and Saint Petersburg who were both last outing winners. While Diamond Rays had steadily moved up to this class, Saint Petersburg had been catapulted into this category on the weight of the three successive wins. As such, Diamond Rays was better positioned to win because his progress had been gradual whereas Saint Petersburg had swiftly moved into this class. Into The Spotlight had run at Chennai over seven furlongs but the horse had run poorly and as such, didn`t much favour with the punters.

David Allan took Into The Spotlight on a start to finish mission and this full brother to the top class racehorse In The Spotlight had always proved a handy customer when he enjoyed an uncontested lead. Neeraj Rawal had Diamond Rays in the proximity of the front-runner while Saint Petersburg was in the third position. The others were spaced out behind. Inside the final furlong, Into The Spotlight came under immense pressure from Diamond Rays who managed to get a marginal lead. But at this point when things looked in favour of the favourite, he began to falter. Into The Spotlight, under a strong ride, rallied back to regain the lead and win by a shade less than a length. Saint Petersburg was a well-beaten third.

Darius Byramji trained Haedi`s Folly who had been excelling in the morning workouts was the strong favourite to regain winning form in the 1400 metres Hurricane Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Siyouni had recorded a stylish win last time out but the six-year-old mare`s wins had always come over a sprint and the extended furlong was bound to prove tough for her. Jockey Sandesh had Haedi`s Folly take a healthy right from the start and the favourite bounced clear of the rest to win with a measure of comfort from Siyouni who showed intent but did not have the stamina and speed for the additional furlong. Torsoro was faraway third, more than seven lengths adrift of the runner-up.

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Summer Palace who had been running consistent races, benefitted most by those efforts and won the 1200 metres Dr C Vittal Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Wings of Desire and Angels Kiss were the market fancies, and both had won their previous outings. Wings of Desire was in done by the bad bump that she got at the start which saw the fancied runner fall back to the last position. Wings of Desire could never recover from that position and even in the straight, she ran into roadblocks which effectively spoiled whatever chances she had. Summer Palace who ran a handy third into the straight was angled out by Ryan Marshall to get a clear run in the stretch and the progeny of Burden of Proof quickened well to go beyond the reach of Angels Kiss to land the spoils at big odds. Madame Sultana ran on to take the third position. Imtiaz Khan trained Flat Out obliged the expectations in the lower division of the race with a start to finish dash. Flat Out skipped away from the rest in the final furlong to win by more than four lengths. Benediction finished second ahead of Morrane Gabriella.

Sandesh drove out favourite Starry Wind to an easy win in the 1600 metres Harangi Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Masada led from the start with Starry Wind keen but restrained in the second position. Starry Wind asserted his supremacy in the homestretch by storming ahead of the front-runner and winning with something to spare. Masada stayed put in the second position ahead of Wild Wild Angels.

Warren Singh trained King of Hearts had the credentials to win the 1400 metres Parfait Amour Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. The five-year-old also received strong support in the betting ring. King of Hearts did not get a brisk start and had conceded many lengths leeway to the front-running Inky Black. The latter who had a handy lead while coming into the straight, skipped away to win from late rallying King of Hearts whose chances were also hurt by the fact that he burst his blood vessels. Color of Gold was third.

Aceros from the stables of Pradeep Annaiah who had let down as a fancied runner made amends in the 1200 metres Dharwar Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Aceros had no problem in assuming command in the stretch to win with a measure of comfort. Touch Your Destiny, Annalease and Secretsuperstar were involved in a cluster finish for the minor placings and finished in the order mentioned behind the winner.
