Bateleur trounces opposition in RCTC Trophy

By: Frankel   January 24 , 2019

Vishal Gaikwad trained Bateleur justified the strong support in the betting ring by trouncing the opposition in the 1200 metres Royal Calcutta Turf Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Thursday`s Mumbai races. A small card of six events was gone through with the best seemingly reserved for next weekend racing which features the mega event of the season, the Indian Derby.

Bateleur had showed out in a mock race and then ran a suggestive second over five furlongs trip which was sharp for his style of running. With an extra furlong to cover, Bateleur was the firm favourite over the other runners in the fray who had fair credentials but were totally outclassed. Jockey Neeraj Rawal took Bateleur to the front from the word `go` and the progeny of Western Aristocrat expanded the lead to a widening margin of seven lengths in the stretch. Stablemate Holy Smoke edged out the late-rallying Queen Credible to keep the second position. Clymene ran below expectations.

Whenever two runners from trainer Pesi Shroff run in a race, things become complicated as it is difficult to make the choice as each of them will have the credentials to win and have good jockeys on their back. The 1600 metres Marchetta Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, presented a problem which in the end provided a totally unexpected result. South India Guineas winner Arabia was the favourite with Shroff`s other horse Spitfire also getting some support to cause an upset. In the end, both these were not seen at the busy end. Arabia who led into the final furlong always looked vulnerable. In the final furlong even as Excellent was boxed in, Texas Gold produced a powerful run on the wide outside to storm ahead and then held off the late flourish of the former who had to be angled out and then cover the leeway conceded. Arabia was a well-beaten third ahead of stablemate Spitfire. Texas Gold was winning the race after 322 days.

A similar situation was confronted by the punters in the day`s opener, the 1400 metes Rao Sahib Parkar Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Kanchenjunga who had showed out in a mock race was more fancied than stablemate Sullivan. In the event, Sullivan had a bold show while Kanchenjunga failed to reproduce the form of the mock race. Jetfire who received strong support based on his consistency, once again found one better, ending up second best. It`s A Deal was a faraway third.

Noshir Cama trained Flower Dust who was well backed to win the 1200 metres Smashing Pate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan brought Flower Dust with a flourishing run in the final furlong from about the fifth or sixth position. The favourite asserted her supremacy to win by a margin of four lengths over Bounty Queen who showed intent but found the winner too good. Invictus Maneo was third. The lower division of the race saw favourite Democrat lose position from the inner draw and fall back to the rear within the first furlong which effectively put paid to his hopes. Jockey Sandesh drove out lesser fancied Choo Mantar to grab the initiative with 200 metres left in the race and had enough cushion to stave off the late rally of Eternal Dancer. She`s A Tiger nosed out Royston Rock to save place money.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Fanfare brought off an upset in the 1800 metres Isn`t She Special Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 30. The race produced an absorbing three-horse finish with Fanfare getting the nod in the closing stride of the race. Silvester led for a long while in the straight but closer home, was confronted with a strong challenge from Rogue One who inched closer. Fanfare who had some lengths to cover, also finished with a rush on the wide outside. The three went past the post locked together with Fanfare having cli8nched the race in what was the concluding stride of the race.
