Akshay Kumar steals the show with five winners

By: Tippu Sultan   February 11 , 2019

Laxman Singh trained Tetra Rama staved off a spirited challenge from favourite Agni by a whisker to land the spoils in the Gr 3 1400 metres Godolphin Barb Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. The day was totally dominated by champion jockey Akshay Kumar who booted home five winners in a card of eight events.

Tetra Rama who had recorded a win in his maiden outing and Agni initially opened as favourites but close to race time, there was sustained betting on Agni. Tetra Rama`s odds drifted to 4 to 1. Victory Parade showed speed to lead the field from the start with Akshay Kumar easing Tetra Rama in the second position ahead of Consigliori, Agni, Cape Kidnappers and Flamboyant Lady. Victory Parade held on to the lead resolutely though, in the final 100 metres, he was slackening. Tetra Rama was ridden out to get the better of the long-time leader and the lesser fancied runner managed to keep the late rally of Agni at bay to prevail by the shortest of margins. Victory Parade stayed on to take the third position ahead of Cape Kidnappers who warmed up rather too late to make a difference to the result. The first four finishers were in close order.

Donald Netto trained Celeritas showed big improvement when swamping the opposition in the 1100 metres Baile Lalith Pershad Memorial Plate, a terms race for three-year-olds. Leo D`Silva trained Kionia was well backed to win the race as the last effort of the filly was impressive but the favourite made no show. Celeritas who had the benefit of a race run was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Akshay Kumar and the progeny of Total Gallery stretched the lead in the final furlong to go beyond the reach of the rest. Southern Lady ran on to take the second position ahead of Her Legacy while the favourite flopped miserably.

Prasad Raju trained Marvel Princess was backed to the exclusion of the rest to record an encore in the 1100 metres Eturnagaram Plate (Div I). Marvel Princess led from the start but inside the final 200 metres was strongly challenged by Man Apart who even headed the front-runner. However, the persevering effort of jockey Akshay Kumar ensured that the favourite fought back and wrested the initiative to win by a head. Cymbal was third. Srinivas Reddy trained Brush The Sky recorded an encore in the lower division of the race. Favourite Promiseofhappiness lost considerable ground at the start and was out of the reckoning. The lesser fancied Baywatch Babe led from the start and shaped to win as she a good cushion till the closing stages of the race. Brush The Sky produced a powerful burst of speed in the hands of apprentice jockey Ismail and finished with a rattle. The two went past the post locked together. Brush The Sky had pulled off a thrilling win by a whisker. Farmville who had chased the front-runner throughout the stretch stayed on to take the third position.

The presence of two horses from Hilton Sequeira in the 1100 metres Business Tycoon Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62 was confusing for the punters as both these horses were in the betting. However, Trump Girl who had the services of Akshay Kumar was the favourite though the odds drifted out close to race time. Arc of History headed the field briefly in the final furlong after taking charge from Platinum but Trump Girl who made the challenge on the inside of the long shot managed to prevail in the end. There was a cluster finish for the minor placings with La Mer getting the third slot.

Sequeira trained Amazing Response bounced back to winning ways with a comprehensive win in the 1200 metres H P Mistry Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 74 and above. The long shot Amazing Response was brought into contention by apprentice jockey Abhay Singh early in the stretch and the lesser fancied runner easily overhauled the front-running Mr Baahubali to go storming clear to win the race with a great deal of ease. That`s My Class came wide into the straight and made a bid but found that the front-runner had gone beyond his reach and had to settle for the second spot ahead of Mr Baahubali. Amazing Response`s stablemate Highly Acclaimed finished down the field and one was not sure what went wrong.

Akshay Kumar drove out lesser fancied Delphina to an easy win in the 1100 metres Sir Bruce Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 30 to round of his day`s tally at five. Satyanarayana trained Magic Street came in for big betting to end up as a strong favourite with the odds on Delphina drifting out. Magic Street raced in earnest and broke into a good lead in the final furlong but was found wanting when Delphina warmed up to the task, covered the bee leeway and then blasted away for an easy win. Adamant And Rising was third several lengths behind. Bombastic was the preferred horse in the lower division of the race. There was also noticeable support for Satheesh trained Loch Stella to have a bold show. The latter had the speed for the scurry as the four-year-old shot into the lead from the outside draw and had expanded the lead to an unassailable one by the final furlong. Though Bombastic covered ground under a hard drive by jockey Akshay Kumar, the task of the favourite was a futile one as he had to be satisfied with the second position. Smarty saved place money finishing third.
