Cadman upsets in Governor`s Cup on Vijay Singh`s day

By: Goldie Boy   February 23 , 2019

Trainer Vijay Singh`s less-fancied six-year-old horse Cadman (Suraj Narredu-up) displayed a significant improved performance to have an easy measure of James McKeown`s 4/1 course-favourite, Shivalik Showers (Hindu Singh), in the 1,600m Governor`s Cup, the feature event in Saturday`s card. The afternoon also witnessed, the jockey-trainer pair winning the 1,200m Bengal Area Cup, another trophy event in the eight-event card, when their 3/1 fancied fillly, Enchanted, decided to gallop in an orderly manner, to beat McKeown`s another runner, Novikov, albeit just about. Vijay finished the afternoon with haul of four winners.

Cadman, a 7/1 shot, displayed substantial improvement, in the regulated cushion of three weeks.

between his two runs that came a handy excuse for winning the Governor`s Cup. Moreover, the declaration of Suraj Narredu, on the horse, was a quiet indication and there is no reason to complain for breaking the racing rules, or the malpractice. Suraj rode a competent race and his powerful horsemanship to have a rather easy measure of Shivalik Showers, the 4/1 favourite.

Shivalik Showers had build up a winning lead, after taking over the running, at the top of the home-turn, from the long time leader, Castlebridge (B. Mahesh).

Enchanted, finally, delivered the goods, thanks to Suraj`s measured negotiation, from a wide outside draw, and powerful riding in the final furlong of the race. The filly beat McKeown`s hope Novikov (Hindu Singh) who covered much ground in the last furlong to lose by a long neck.

Incidentally, Enchantment was the only clear favourite to have scored in the eight-event card that witnessed open bettings, between 4`s and 5`s in rest of the events.

Vijay`s quadruple also included the easy victory of his baby, Ruby Cube (Shezad Khan), a 7/1 chance in the 1,100m Miss X O Lence Plate. Ruby Cube. The Shamidd colt, in fact, won very impressively, coming with a late run, after the fancied runner, Incendio (A. Sandesh) had met with a bad check within the first 300m of the race. Ruby Cube sported the famed colours of late MAM -- the ‘gold and brown belt`.

Duchamp (Sandesh) had opened Vijay`s account, winning the 2,000m Aayush Handicap easily. The waiting tactics on the front running horse had, perhaps, paid off on the 4/1 favourite in the race; which was keenly contested for the lesser berths.

Trainer Shyam Habbu has been going through a purple patch and the last Saturday in the month of February was no exception. Habbu, saddled Shivesh (S. Zervan), a 7/1 chance in the betting, to an easy victory in the 1,600m Misty Melody Handicap. The Multidimensional son had many a let downs to his name but he galloped resolutely, from the mid-division in the home straight to beat trainer Bharath Singh`s four-year-old Oak Brook, who also made a late appearance in the stretch run while Arti Doctor`s Sabrejet threatened to win from the start. In the same race, the 3/1 public choice, He Calls The Shot (Suraj) remained planted at the start and refused to gallop.

Romantic Lass (app. Rupal Singh) provided trainer Raunak Banerji an exciting win, perhaps, his first of the season, as the top-weighted mare downed a heavily fancied favourite, Dancing Prince (app. Tejeshwar) in The upper divisions of the Maltese Prince Handicap, a ‘no whip race`. The mare enjoyed a commanding lead in the final 200m but burst blood vessel to just about last out to score.

The lower division of the race was, however, an easy pick for McKeown`s Romantic Zeal (C. Alford). The victory of the top-weighted filly became easy because of the withdrawal of trainer Harvinder Bath`s horse, Winner`s Delight, at the start.
