Anjeze overwhelms the opposition in Cecil Million

  May 19 , 2019

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Anjeze recorded her third straight win when swamping the opposition in splendid fashion in the 400 metres Sir Cecil Youngsters Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Sunday`s Bangalore races. Anjeze who is a strong contender for the Fillies Championship hasn`t put a foot wrong and her real worth will be tested in the first classic of the season where a host of outstation horses which did not figure in this race will show up.

Anjeze who is a full sister to the dual Derby-winning Angelique had proved her mettle in both outings in the winter season and as such, it was not difficult for the punters to make her the overwhelming favourite. Gallantry who had won a graded race at Mumbai was favoured to make an impact along with Thailand and Cape Kidnappers. Trevor Patel had no hesitation in taking the daughter of Win Legend on a start to finish mission and the speedy customer swept the others off their feet in the stretch to win by a widening margin of five lengths. Gallantry was sorted out once the pace picked up in the straight as she struggled and eventually ended up fourth. Thailand ran on from behind to take the second position ahead of Cape Kidnappers.

Pesi Shroff-trained Arabia who had gone off the boil after winning the South India Guineas bounced back to winning ways with a comprehensive win in the 1400 metres Managing Committee Gold Cup, a race for horses rated 75 and above. Trainer Pesi Shroff had said that Arabia had furnished better and looked to be in good shape for the summer campaign and he was spot on in his assessment. Jockey Neeraj Rawal had Arabia track pace-setter Into The Spotlight well into the straight before skipping clear. Brainstorm essayed a strong challenge but Arabia had enough reserves to stay at a safe distance from the challenger. Merlot finished with a late effort to displace Automatic from the third position.

Neil Darashah trained Blue Moon who had let down as a fancied runner last time out made amends in the 1400 metres Dr T Thimmaiah Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Blue Moon hit the front from the start and gutsily held on to thwart the strong challenge of Into The Groove and Areca legend. A head and a neck separated the first three finishers. Snowdon appeared far from ready and finished poorly.

Trainer Inayathulla who was finding winners hard to come by had a welcome relief in the form of the fancied Mega Ikon who had it easy in the 1100 metres Esquire Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Jockey Vivek too could break the jinx on Mega Ikon who was taken on a start to finish mission. Knight Templar ran on suggestively to be second despite the trip being sharp for his liking. Favourite Jersey Legend was completely out of sorts finishing a dismal third seven lengths behind the runner up as he barely necked out Silver Swift for the third position.

The well-backed Alpha from the stables of trainer Neil Darashah seized control of the race within the first furlong and was never headed in the 1200 metres Poonawalla Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Alpha looked the winner all the way though there was an element of excitement when Alberetta made a late dash. Tarini held off Armin to get the third position.

Akshay Kumar drove out the well-backed Mahanati from the stables of trainer Azhar Ali to a facile win in the 1200 metres Lady Gibraltar Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Stari Grad made a strong bid but found the front-runner having that bit extra to pull away. Incitatus finished well but lost the runner-up berth narrowly.

Imtiaz Khan trained High Admiral came in for big support in the ring and the six-year-old mare readily justified the enthusiasm of her supporters with a start to finish mission, skipping clear in the final furlong to win the 1200 metres Udhagamandalam Plate, a race for horses in the the lowest class by a margin of over six lengths. Island Bay kept Glorious Days at bay to get the runner-up berth.
