Areca Legend scrapes home in Stewards Cup

  June 22 , 2019

Prasanna Kumar trained Areca Legend just about staved off the spirited bid of Haedi`s Folly to win the 1200 metres Stewards Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Bangalore races. Areca Legend was backed to the exclusion of the rest to record an encore and the progeny of Air Support just about reached the safety of the winning post even as his energies were sapping.

Areca Legend had no doubt recorded an impressive win last time out, but the one-sided support came about because most runners in the fray appeared to be out for an airing. Stablemate Spiritous who was bidding for a hat-trick had good credentials but since the preferred horse was Areca Legend, the former was not expected to trouble the favourite. After tracking Minver Rose into the straight, Suraj Narredu pushed Areca Legend to take charge and the favourite bounced clear. However, in the final stages of the race Haedi`s Folly threw a scare as he came home with a menacing run only to find the front-runner escape to victory. Spiritous was left to cover plenty of ground on the front-runners but finished on strongly indicating that with a more enterprising ride, the filly could have troubled the winner.

Padmanabhan trained Snowdon showed good improvement when beating the favourite Into The Groove with a powerful burst of speed in the 1400 metres V Venugopal Naidu Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 6 5. Trevor had Into The Groove lead from the start but closer home, found Snowdon essaying a strong challenge and unable to extract more from the favourite. Agni who shaped to have a say at the finish weakened to take the third position.

Another Padmanabhan trainee Knight Templar built on his forward run and gave a strong performance in the 1600 metres Paddiwick Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Sir Supremo who had disappointed last time out with a timid performance gave an improved performance as Suraj took the fancied runner on a start to finish mission. Sir Supremo led deep in the straight but Knight Templar who was in hot pursuit managed to overwhelm the front-runner inside the final 100 metres to record a comfortable win. Tenno Sho held off Speaking of Stars to save place money.

Dominic trained Smile of Joy showed amazing improvement in performance when swamping the opposition in the 1600 metres Malenahalli Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Smile of Joy had failed miserably as a fancied runner last time out but this time out, in the hands of P S Chouhan, the horse proved to be a revelation, winning by more than 10 lengths in a timing of one minute37.7 seconds which is normally associated with the winners of the highest class and not the lowest category as was the case in this instance. Scarlet Princess held off Aleef by a neck to get the runner-up berth.

Neil Darashah trained Silent Guardian was backed as if his defeat was out of the question in the 1100 metres Cape Dance Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. The long shot from the Prasanna Kumar stable Ideological hit the front from the word `go` and in the hands of jockey Chetan Kalay skipped clear in the straight to win by a widening margin of five lengths over debutant Legendary Princess. Silent Guardian was beaten to the third place.

Cosmos from the stables of Darius Byramji recorded an encore in thrilling fashion in the 1800 metres Camineto Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Lesser fancied Foi Et Amour from Padmanabhan`s yard stole a march on the favourite on turning for home and it took the length of the straight for Cosmos to get the nod in the final stride of the race. Velocidad also finished on with a rush to be a close third.

Nityanand trained Adventurer appreciated the step up in distance by claiming the 1400 metres Honeyday Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, with a great deal of ease. Musterion who received unprecedented support in the betting ring led in earnest but in the final furlong was sorted out by the eventual winner. Chantelle finished on purposefully to take the second position ahead of the favourite who let down huge expectations.
