Spirit of London makes it in Elusive Pimpernel Cup

  July 27 , 2019

Prithviraj trained Spirit of London was powerfully ridden out by jockey Sandesh to land the spoils in the 1400 metres Elusive Pimpernel Cup, a race for horses rated 30 to 50, the feature event of a lacklustre card of six events that were framed for Saturday`s Bangalore races. The card looked tricky but thankfully for the punters, fancied runners did not let them down.

Spirit of London had run a forward race 70 days ago earlier in the season despite a lackadaisical effort by his jockey after having signed off with a win during the winter season. Spirit of London was backed with conviction to bounce back to winning ways. Spirit of London lacked early speed and was several lengths adrift of the pacesetting Jayadratha. Tokyo Rose and San Bernardino raced behind the pacemaker and the latter took over the running on turning for home. Sandesh waited for his opportunity to work his way through the middle and then began to drive out the horse aggressively approaching the final furlong. Spirit of London responded well to go storming clear in the final 100 metres and had no problem in staving off the late bid of Reczai. Tokyo Rose who was racing close to the rails went wide and raced almost on the edge of the grass track despite which the last start winner ran on strongly only to miss the runner-up berth by a whisker to Reczai who is as is her wont, came late on the scene.

Though Aine had disappointed in her last run, that performance was good enough to fetch victory in the 1100 metre Aureole Time Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, as the other runners had fared poorly relatively. Jockey Y S Srinath who is back after nursing an operated shoulder, had the fancied runner take charge from the word `go` from the innermost draw. The progeny of Western Aristocrat led all the way and had no problem in keeping the late rally of Sun Power at bay. Genuine Star who stayed in touch with the front-runner till the final 300 metres, gradually weakened to finish a tame third.

The one-sided betting on Narayan Gowda trained Colonel Harty in the 1400 metres Astronomic Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, was only to be expected after the four-year-old had dragged himself to prominence when he had finished a reluctant second behind the runaway winner Galvarino over a shorter trip. The others in the fray had no form to recommend their credentials. Jockey Rajesh Kumar had Colonel Harty in front as soon as the horses took off from the gates and the only horse who gave a chase was Sharp Response who was running after a longish gap of 378 days. Colonel Harty skipped clear in the stretch to win by a widening margin of five lengths over Sharp Response who should be better off for this run. Stars In His Eyes who saved place money was more than seven lengths adrift of the runner-up.

Neil Darashah trained Electra who had failed to justify expectations last time out was confidently backed to win over the extended trip of a mile in the 1600 metres Baraloy Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35 with last start runaway winner Smile of Joy getting serious support. Jockey Chethan Gowda who was back in action after a longish suspension had Electra chase Radiant Treasure well into the straight before getting busy. Electra got the better of the front-runner in the final furlong and went away for a comfortable win despite drifting out under pressure. Smile of Joy who was always in the third position failed to make an impression on the front-runners and stayed put in the same slot. Smile of Joy was among the growing list of horses which have failed to record a repeat win after being the subject of stiff penalties as is the norm in Bangalore. For the record, Smile of Joy had won at the rating of 13 and her rating had jumped to 34 after her last win.

The only horse with reasonable form in the field that contested the 1600 metres Sha Tin Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 20, was Sharat Kumar trained Dreams United. The market trend indicated Dreams United would be in serious business. The odds on the original favourite Silent Ruler drifted out while there was smart money on Phoenix Reached. Jockey Irvan Singh confidently sat with the horse till turning for home and was not perturbed when he didn`t get a clear run on straightening for home and preferred to let the horses pass and brought the five-year-old on the outside of those in front. Dreams United accelerated in tremendous fashion and drew clear of the rest in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of six lengths over Phoenix Reached. Silent Ruler was third.

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Schafenberg had no problem in justifying the strong favouritism in the 1200 metres Divine Light Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Backed with supreme confidence to oblige, Trevor Patel had Schafenberg chase Blue Bliss who went on a start to finish mission. Inside the final furlong, the well backed front-runner began to slacken and Schafenberg zoomed ahead and won by a margin of three lengths. Magic Stream was second while Rorito managed to stave off the late bid of Star Sapphire to save place money. Blue Bliss weakened to finish a poor fifth. Both Magic Stream who came from a long way back and Rorito should be better off for this effort.
