Psychic Force has it easy in Jayachamaraja Trophy

  August 29 , 2019

Darius Byramji trained Psychic Force who had found Big Sur too good in his last run at Bangalore made amends by swamping the opposition in the 1600 metres H H Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of opening day`s races of the Mysore Regular Season on Thursday. Trainers Darius Byramji and Arjun Mangalorkar and their retained jockeys Zervan and John had a double each.

Psychic Force was surprisingly offered at a higher price than was expected considering the fact the South India Derby winner was beaten by Big Sur and the latter almost had the measure of Indian Derby winner Star Superior. The others in the race did not have the credentials to cause an upset barring Kambaku who hasn`t won for 391 days and has seen better days. Royal Sceptre set a good pace followed by Ship Rock, Kambaku and Psychic Force. Rounding the final turn, Zervan wasted no time in finding a clear path on the outside of the front-runners. The progeny of Multidimensional quickly established his supremacy by the final furlong by staving off the challenge of Kambaku and recorded an emphatic win. Grand Tenton came from a long way back to occupy the third position.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Merlot had run good forward runs at Bangalore and her last run at Bangalore where she had finished a suggestive third to New Creation indicated that she was ready to strike in the 1400 metres Star of Mysore Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Sakura who had won last time out shared favouritism with Merlot. Travieso set a comfortable pace with John on Merlot keeping the fancied runner in a striking position with Set To Win in proximity while Sakura was several lengths behind. John was quick to push Merlot to take over the running on straightening for home and the progeny of Saamid went storming ahead and looked a winner long way from home. Set To Win gave a chase in vain. Sakura was left to cover a lot of ground and all that she could do was to save place money.

Another Arjun Mangalorkar trainee Air Command looked a cut above the rest in the 1200 metres B K Krishnadevaraj Urs Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Jockey John kept Air Command comfortably settled behind pace-setting Mint. Inside the final 300 metres, Air Command sailed to an unassailable lead and retired home a facile winner from late-finishing Super Success. Mint kept the third position from Depth Charge.

Ranjeet Shinde trained Breaking News who was available at long odds, won the opening race of the season, the 1200 metres Somanathpur Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class by a short neck over late rallying Tough Sussex. The odds drift on Sharat Kumar trained Star Style which shot up faster than mercury in summer gave a clear indication that the favourite was not worth the support. Breaking News who tracked Velvet Rose into the straight shot ahead in the final furlong and just about held on to win from Tough Sussex. The last-named tailed the field but made good ground along the rails and finished with a rush only to miss the berth narrowly. Pikachu, who was in the hunt, weakened but finished a close third.

Pradeep Annaiah trained Kimera came in for big support in the betting ring and duly obliged in the hands of jockey Y S Srinath in the 1400 metres Indradhanush Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The odds drift on Alexander Burnes was not exactly an encouraging sign for those intending to put their faith on the favourite. Srinath had Kimera race a handy second behind pacesetting Scarlet Princess. The fancied runner smoothly cruised into the lead in the stretch and went away for an effortless win by a margin of over four lengths. Tokyo Rose ran on to finish second ahead of Alexander Burnes who showed no improvement over the previous effort. Tokyo Rose reportedly pulled up lame after the race. Favourite Magic Stream from the stables of trainer Darius Byramji won the lower division of the Indradhanush Plate. Jockey Zervan had the short-priced favourite Magic Dream in a handy fourth position before making his move in the stretch. The progeny of Multidimensional assumed command inside the final 300 metres and recorded a comfortable win over All In. Lightning Attack who led briefly before being overtaken by the eventual winner stayed on to take the third position.

Santosh Rao trained Perfect Legacy was smashed in the betting ring to have a decisive say in the 1200 metres Pune Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 but the favourite found himself having to cover too much of leeway in the final furlong which went against his chances. Bobby trained Trevelyan who was bidding to record a hat-trick of wins was not enthusiastically supported. Apprentice jockey Sameer Khan kept Trevelyan second behind Humming Bird and the former went storming ahead in the straight and established a winning lead by the final furlong. Perfect Legacy who had the widest draw lacked the early speed and jockey Sai Kiran brought him wide into the straight. Despite being ridden out, Perfect Legacy could only bridge the gap as Trevelyan had gone beyond the reach of the favourite. Engelberg ran on to finish third.
