Amazing win by Northern Alliance in Guineas

  September 27 , 2019

An extraordinary effort on the part of jockey Suraj Narredu and a spectacular burst of speed by Northern Alliance despite cutting an erratic course saw the Neil Devaney ward record a splendid win in the Gr 2 Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Golf Club Mysore 2000 Guineas, the second classic of the season at Mysore on Friday. The win provided his trainer Neil with the first classic of his career while also providing his stallion Gusto of Bishan Stud with a creditable classic win for owners Clinton Miller and his friends.

Northern Alliance had performed below expectations over a furlong sharp in his last outing where Abira had managed to win by her speed and alacrity. Punters persisted with Northern Alliance as his performance at Bangalore over a mile was the one which gave notice of his classic potential and there was a belief that he would make amends over the extended trip. Southern Ruler who was going into this race with hardly the kind of preparation that would be required for a race of this nature was nevertheless in serious betting on his eye-catching effort in the Bangalore Derby in the month of July where he had finished fourth. However, it was unlikely that he could be effective with the lack of preparedness. The only filly in the fray Abira was disadvantaged by the fact that she was running in eights days and it was a tough ask for the game filly.

For the supporters of Northern Alliance, it was an ominous beginning as the favourite literally slept at the gates and took a lethargic start losing ground at the start. Thereafter, Northern Alliance moved up to take a handy position in the mid-field, but the problems were far from over for the public fancy. Northern Alliance was inclined to run out in the stretch and Suraj Narredu had to use all the power in his wrist to have a firm right-hand grip while using the whip on the left to prevent the horse from veering out. Northern Alliance was not inclined to obey his rider as he kept veering out and looked like having lost all the chances. Suraj was tactful on the horse and did not let the horse break his stride and did enough to prevent the horse from going on to the outer sand track. Northern Alliance devoured ground in the final furlong and won by a shade over a length despite all his tantrums. Southern Ruler who had the first run on his opponents by shooting ahead in the stretch was first collared by Abira before Malwa shot ahead and shaped to win before being overwhelmed by the superior ability of Northern Alliance. Suraj Narredu deserved praise for his riding while young trainer Neil the applause for turning in a classic winner so early in his career.

Suraj Narredu said that he wanted to get the colt relaxed at the start as the horse had shown too much keenness in the last effort, but the favourite surprised him when he took a slow start. ``My wrist is hurting because of the power with which I had to hold my right rein to prevent Northern Alliance from veering out. Northern Alliance continued to veer out despite using the whip on the left. Now I have a problem of choice for the Derby because the filly who won the 1000 Guineas and Northern Alliance have been both impressive in their wins.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Point To Prove which had been mostly campaigned in terms races found a modest set to record a comfortable second win of the career after a gap of 280 days in the 1600 metre Mayor`s Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Jockey Neeraj Rawal had Point To Prove to lead from the start and the progeny of Multidimensional was not unduly extended to check-in by a widening margin of four lengths. There was a close finish for minor placings with Mystic Flame necking out Striking Grey for the runner-up berth while Grand Tenton was a close fourth another neck behind Striking Grey.

Rakesh trained Cyclone recorded an impressive win in the 1200 metres Udhagamandalam Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The odds drift on ante-post favourite Butterfly reflect the lack of confidence in the preparedness of the filly to strike it rich. The lesser fancied Cyclone burst on the scene in the final furlong and stormed ahead of Valkyrie to win the race in great style. Coorg Regiment necked out Eddie The Eagle to save place money. Butterfly was not spotted at the busy end.

Faraz Arshad trained Decisive built on his forward run behind Defender by staving off a strong challenge of favourite Musterion to land the spoils in the Esquire Pate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The hard-ridden Musterion managed to get the better of Magic Stream down the final furlong but was confronted by a strong challenge from the lesser fancied Decisive who managed to put his neck in front at the post. Magic Dream held off the heavily backed Helenka to get the third position. The lower division of the race proved disappointing for Faraz as his another trainee Karadeniz went down fighting to the well-backed Great Celebration in the final stride of the race. Neeraj Rawal took the speedy Karadeniz on a start to finish mission with Admirable in the chase. Karadeniz kicked on resolutely and shook off his pursuer but closer home Great Celebration finished with a rush to snatch a last stride win. Admirable was third.

Sharavanan trained Ireland came in for one-sided support in the 1200 metres Hogenakal Plate, a race for horses rated in the lowest category. Ireland had won in the higher category albeit 696 days ago. The heavy betting indicated that Ireland would be prepared to put his best foot forward though the favourite began with a wrong step! However, he was overwhelmingly superior in class as the seven-year-old came from the rear of the field and made rapid strides in the stretch to get the better of long-time leader At The Top before storming clear in the closing stages of the race. Surprise Package came up with a late dash to grab the second position ahead of At The Top.

Rakesh trained Cavarozzi won the 1600 metres Sea Mist Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 in impressive fashion. Cavarozzi chased Daughterofthesun well into the straight before asserting his supremacy in the stretch in the hands of jockey Umesh to record a handsome win. Silver Dew was faraway third. The disappointment of the race was the poor performance of favourite Venus Bay who was not inclined to raise a fluent gallop.
