Knotty Ash prevails in an absorbing finish

  October 11 , 2019

Prasanna Kumar trained Knotty Ash prevailed in the Gr 3 Bookmakers Mysore Dasara Sprint Championship, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Friday`s Mysore races in a sensational finish. Knotty Ash got the nod in the closing stride of the race from Star Baron and stablemate Areca Legend in one of the tightest three-horse finishes of the season. Jockey John who was in indifferent form since coming back from a long suspension was seen in his elements as besides the success on Knotty Ash, he was also successful on two other favourites.

Knotty Ash was expected to bounce back to winning ways over the more suitable trip of six furlongs but the odds offered on his success were surely too low because the race was not going to be an easy one for him. There were at least three runners who were capable of winning as they were well matched by the terms of the race. The race was a scrappy affair with one of the prime contenders knocked out of contention in the early part of the race by the erratic running of Captain Courage who caused a chain reaction which resulted in Lady Legend going on Cavallo Veloce repeatedly which effectively put paid to the hopes of the Chennai challenger. The three runners who had a trouble-free passage were the ones who were seen at the busy end.

The speedy Areca Legend led the field with Star Baron and Knotty Ash chasing the front-runner while the others behind were involved in a scrimmage caused by Captain Courage. Areca Legend led by many lengths into the straight and jockey Imran Chisty drove him out desperately. The front runner hung on gamely even as John was at his aggressive best on Knotty Ash while Star Baron was not inclined to give up and battled on resolutely. It looked as though Knotty Ash could find it tough but John was able to drive out the favourite to pull off a thrilling win over Star Baron who went a little wide under pressure and lost by a whisker. Areca Legend was a nose behind the runner-up.

Azhar Ali trained Brave Lady seems to have taken a liking to the Mysore track. After a long wait, Brave Lady had recorded an easy win last time out and she recorded an encore in the 1600 metres Urs Kar Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. John had Brave Lady lead aggressively in front and the fancied runner skipped away in the straight to win easily from Reczai and Aaron The Baron. Starry Wind who had run an eye-catching race last time out struggled and finished poorly.

Rakesh trained Kaguya Himei had it easy in the 1600 metres Autumn Blue Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Kaguya Himei took a firm grip on the race going into the final furlong and was not unduly extended to win from stablemate Eudora. Fancied San Vinto took a long while to warm up in the stretch and by the time the five-year-old could get into his rhythm, the race was already in the safekeeping of Kaguya Himei who was guided by Umesh. San Vinto had to settle for the third position.

Sharavanan trained All In had won against the run of expectations last time out and the trainer had been slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 for the improved performance of his ward. Backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 metres Chirapunji Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, All In covered ground in amazing fashion in the final furlong to storm ahead of Eddie The Eagle to record a facile win. How the connections had managed to keep All In from winning all these days and how the Stipes failed to notice the lack of effort is something hard to explain. Kir Royale was third. From about the fourth position at the final bend, Willow Gen responded well to the urgings of jockey John and collared the front-running Humming Bird and won the lower division of the race quite easily. Willow Gen was seeing the winning post after a long gap of 292 days. My Queen ran on to take the third position.

Samar Singh trained Alvarez brought off a big upset in the 1200 metres Lokapavani Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Alvarez hadn`t won for 710 days and was available at long odds. At The Top had the advantage going into the final furlong but Alvarez managed to snatch the lead in the shadow of the post and was lucky to survive the late onslaught of fancied Dolphin who covered enormous ground but missed the berth by a whisker.

The connections of Oceana perhaps felt that the long wait of 639 days was enough and this showed in the spirited support for the eight-year-old mare to win the 1100 metres Triveni Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Oceana led in earnest from the start and had no problem in staying clear of Vroom Vroom who chased the front-runner in vain. Star Lagoon saved place money by a whisker over Surprise Package.
