Phenomenal Cruise wins Ghulam Ahmed Trophy

By: Tippu Sultan   November 17 , 2019

Donald Netto trained Phenomenal Cruise thwarted the spirited bid of Ace Ace Ace to win the 1600 metres Ghulam Ahmed Memorial Cup, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races. Favourite Isabella totally disappointed finishing a dismal last.

Isabella was widely expected to have a decisive say but the favourite who stayed in the rear group did not make any headway in the straight and ended poorly. After Highly Acclaimed held sway well into the straight, Phenomenal Cruise took charge and skipped clear of Ace Ace Ace to land the spoils at long odds. Jockey A A Vikrant rode the winner. Be Sure ran on to take the third position.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Prince Valiant prevailed in the 1400 metres Chief Justice Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Prince Valiant was baulked for an opening at a crucial stage of the race but jockey Ajeeth Kumar managed to squeeze his way on the inside of Flamboyant Lady and Galloping Gangster and the favourite then bounced clear to win with a measure of comfort.

Flamboyant Lady took over the running from the front-running Her Legacy with a furlong left in the race with Galloping Gangster essaying a strong challenge on her outside. Prince Valiant was stuck along the rails and with nowhere to go, Ajeeth angled out Prince Valiant and forced his way in a dangerous fashion. The horse was so superior the moment he put his head in front, he stormed clear. Galloping Gangster who was inconvenienced by the winner had to shift out but railed to take the second position ahead of Flamboyant Lady. The objection by Robbie Downey who rode Galloping Gangster against Ajeeth Kumar who was astride the winner was overruled as Prince Valiant was clearly the superior horse and the Stewards felt that the interference did not merit reversing the verdict.

Lesser fancied Hurricane from the stables of trainer Robin Reddy had it easy in the 1100 metres Medak Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25. Ursula led deep into the straight before Hurricane who was in the chase asserted his supremacy in the final furlong to win with a great deal of ease in the hands of apprentice Abhay Singh. The heavily backed favourite Blazing Speed lacked the early speed and conceded too much ground to the front-runners which resulted in the favourite finishing a disappointing third.

The persevering effort of jockey Imran Khan got the desired response as the Shezad Abbas trainee Portstewart gathered steam in the final furlong and managed to edge past the front-running favourite Aintree in the closing stride of the 1200 metres Elusive Hero Plate, a race for maiden two-year-olds. Aintree shaped to win as Portstewart, and Coastal Cruise were struggling to pick up speed but the complexion of the race as the winning post was sighted with the favourite slowing down perceptibly. Coastal Cruise was a close third. The rest of the runners were far behind.

Leo D`Silva trained Lancashire brought off a big upset in the 1800 metres Golconda Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Satheesh trained Gazebo came in for big betting to end up as a strong favourite. Gazebo however was never in the hunt and was a beaten cause well before the race came to the boil. Magnetosphere led the field into the straight but in the final furlong Blue Empress took charge and went sailing clear and shaped to win. Lancashire who was loitering in the rear when the horses straightened for the homestretch, made a splendid rally and came charging at the front-runner and managed to pull off an improbable win in the bobbing of heads. Unstoppable ran on to finish third. Gazebo was a poor fourth.

Akshay Kumar rode with great commitment on favourite Asteria who responded well in the final furlong to get the better of long time leader Arc of History in the final moments of the race in the 1200 metres Sri Shamlal Gupta Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Proud Warrior too ran on late with a big effort to snatch the runner-up berth.

Long shot News O Star from the stables of trainer Ravinder Singh took over the running within the first furlong and held the lead comfortably to win the 1400 metres Aristocrat Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 by a comfortable margin. Pontius Pilate tried to catch up with the front-runner, but the effort proved futile. However, Pontius Pilate managed to keep the second position ahead of the late rallying Tootsie Roll.

Robbie Downey brought Beyond Limits with a stunning run in the stretch from way off the pace to down the front-running Red Snapper close home to land the spoils in the 1400 metres Grace Hanover Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Downey managed to weave his way along the rails before angling out his horse to challenge the front-runner successfully. Handsome Duo ran on to save place money. Favourite Mind Reader went wide at the final bend and was poorly handled by apprentice Jitendra Singh who appeared to have panicked unable to keep his horse on a straight course.
