Angelino wins after a wait of 412 days

  December 20 , 2019

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Angelino held off stablemate Into The Groove to win the1400 metres Kabini Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Bangalore Races held on Friday. Angelino thus recorded the second win of his career from nine starts after a long wait of 412 days.

Mystic Flame whose both wins had come over a trip longer than seven furlongs was made the favourite ahead of Angelino whose last run wasn`t inspiring as he had finished more than 12 lengths behind the winner sticking to the rear. Into The Groove who has this habit of finding one better on six occasions was the third favourite. This time out, Trevor Patel took Angelino to the front within the first furlong overtaking stablemate Into The Groove and stayed put there resolutely. Though David Allan went all out on Into The Groove, the filly lacked the finishing punch and had to settle for the runner-up all over again. Ashwa Raftar ran on to take the third position.

Neil Darashah trained Here And Now justified the strong favouritism and measured Streaming Gold in the waning yards of the race to win the 2000 metres Garden City Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. After Electra ran freely in front and expended his energy in the stretch, Streaming Gold who was tracking the front-runner surged ahead and held the initiative till the closing moments of the race. Here And Now who was settled well off the pace in the rear made rapid strides in the homestretch and got the nod in thrilling fashion in the hands of jockey Imran Khan. Grey Channel got the better of tiring Electra to get the third position.

The opening race of the day, the 1200 metres Beloved Prince Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, was won by Prithviraj trained Candlelightqueen who nailed Gin Daisy in the concluding stride of the race. Unifier started as a favourite, but the price drift indicated that there was a question mark about the prospects of the Irfan Ghatala trainee and true to market expectation, Unifier was never in the hunt. Gin Daisy overhauled the front-running Aerospeed with a furlong left in the race and shaped to win but faltered close home which enabled the fast-finishing Candlelightqueen to get the nod. Princeazeem was third. Debutant Foresight collapsed at the unsaddling enclosure and was vanned off.

Amazing Angel opened as a favourite for the 1400 metres Chamundi Hills Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, but the price drift did not give a positive vibe about the horse`s prospects. Limato came in for sustained betting while Paradiso who had some form to go by was surprisingly ignored in the betting ring. Arshad Alam took Paradiso on a start to finish mission and the lesser fancied runner enjoyed the uncontested lead, had a good cushion going into the final furlong and held off the late challenge of Amazing Angel who was poorly positioned by jockey Jagadeesh. Limato was a close third losing the runner-up berth in the shadow of the post.

Nityanand trained Panama brought off an upset in the 1200 metres lower division of the Bellary Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Panama enjoyed her foray in front and comfortably stayed put there to win from Radiant Treasure. Last start winner Lucky Isabella ran on to finish third. Irfan Ghatala trained Varcasva came in for spirited betting Varcasva gave no hope and was lost in the crowd. Capstone dropped her jockey Shiva Kumar and the riderless horse was a hindrance for those at the back. The Stewards perhaps had become wise after riots on the opening day for not looking into the racing mishap ordered an enquiry into the running of the race and disqualified Armin who had finished fourth for tightening the field on the inside causing the fall of jockey Shiva Kumar.

After two fancied runners from Irfan Ghatala ran poorly, a long shot from his stables Alberetta brought off an upset in the 1200 metres Bellary Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Royal Resolution was backed to the exclusion of the rest, but the favourite was very badly interfered and lost whatever chance he had of winning. Arul on Triggar cut across causing Royal Resolution causing the latter to be checked and then his horse banged the rails causing the jockey to come a cropper almost right in front of Royal Resolution. David Allan did well to stay in the saddle but the favourite not only lost position but also lost his rhythm and eventually finished last. Alberetta produced a strong run in the final furlong to get the better of front-running Birchwood. Wings of Desire nosed out Optimisticapproach to grab the third position.
