Suraj Narredu, Vijay Singh grab limelight on last day

By: Goldie Boy   April 9 , 2021

Jockey Suraj Narredu was in his elements on Friday, the concluding fixture of the cold weather season. The crafty rider won four races in the afternoon`s eight-event card, besides claiming the championship crown, tallying 30 winners. Trainer Vijay Singh`s afternoon`s tally of a brace of wins was no match with his retained jockey but saddling 52 winners during the regularly disrupted season was no mean a task. Needless to mention that the bigger gain followed his way by way of winning the champion-trainer crown.

Reviewing the final day`s race card sounds like a fruitless exercise in view of local stock unlikely to take up the Southward journey because of the travel restrictions, and the monsoon season is a good three months away. Yet some memorable performances in Friday`s card are worth storing in the memory.

Trainer Manvendra Singh`s colt, Estrella Star (Shezad Khan-up) defied odds while notching up yet another race on her way to winning the lower division of the Eagle Pines Handicap. The Eljohar – Pure Distance colt won his fourth race during the current season, and it may hardly come as a surprise if he continues to the winning ways during the monsoon season -- after a long rest of about 12 weeks. Estrella Star, with a top-weight of 60-kg on his back, was ridden in check and walked on the scene late to record a very fluent victory. The horse`s season`s performance was, therefore, deservingly acknowledged, along with other champions who claimed titles.

The other one who also hit a boundary was the Suraj-ridden Rainbow Trout, from Vijay`s stable. He not only won the afternoon`s feature -- the 1,400m Dandified Cup—without raising much of a sweat, the joint-favourite with trainer Aashay Doctor`s Awesome One (Akshay Kumar) also treated those in the betting with not much regard. It was Rainbow Trout`s fourth win in a row.

Awesome One was expected to be the horse to beat on the basis of his impressive performance against Star Superior, early in the season. The Dean`s Kitten son, was, in fact, left to place a struggling third. May be the 5kg loss in the body weight, despite a long rest of about nine weeks, had something to do with his fitness.

Oasis was Suraj`s another winner, for Vijay. The youngster impressed as one who may rule in the monsoon weeks. Allowing trainer Harvinder Bath`s Lady Laurane (Sameer Khan) to call the shot till about the home turn, Oasis came abreast the leader and simply left the field cold. What a performance – quality painted all over, after an educative run on the Boxing Day.

Bath`s Nova (Suraj) was also backed as if she had already sewn up the race, the 1,200m Sound Of Cheers Handicap. The filly, in fact, won the way she liked, treating Manvendra Singh`s western India migrant, Isle Of Skye (Afzal Khan) with no regards.

However, the other western India migrant, Barak (Suraj) fully justified his superior class in the 1,400m Sunray Handicap. Allowing the speedy Namak Halaal (app A.K. Jaiswal) to call the shots, Suraj brought the 7/4 favourite alongside the leader and went zoomed past for a four-length victory.
Trainer Shyam Habbu`s in-form filly, Yahalla (R.S. Bhati). too, cashed in on her recent performances while winning the 1,200m Eagle Pines Handicap. The fact that it was her third win since the Derby Day, the long rest may help her cause.

Trainer Javed Khan`s Stagger (app P. Tajeshwar) had been knocking at the door and her narrow victory over Berluti (Sameer), in the 1,100m High Born Handicap hardly came as a surprise.

And there is nothing to write home about Ashwamegh`s (Vinay Jaiswal) ‘nose` victory over Tomorrow`s Forever (app Sujit Paswan) in the 1,100m Bright Law Handicap. Such things keep on happening in the lowest class.
