Southern Emperor simply sensational

The weather Gods conspired to make a mockery of the decision of the Stewards to postpone the Mysore Derby day racing from last Sunday to Friday. For the weather was just as bad as it would have been on that day had racing been held. The only compensation was that the first four races went through without a hitch off the track but plenty on it as rank outsider rained on the track. Southern Emperor was simply sensational when winning the Derby by a widening margin of seven lengths in adverse conditions.

Even as it rained and rendered the track water-logged, the authorities thought it fit to go through the card. Whether or not the punters benefitted, the bookies indeed did as favourites disappeared into the cloudy weather unseen in all races except the last when Tony Montana won by a street as if to lure and re-invite punters for the winter season from Nov 13.

In all the rain and much, Trainer Ganapathy finally won the elusive Mysore Derby over 2000 metres, a terms affair for 3-year-olds only, through Southern Emperor. Perfect Soul set a furious pace in heavy rain and difficult underfoot conditions with Scenic Warrior, Southern Emperor, Czar Of Romance, Ace Bucephalus, Racing Ahead, Turf Striker, Ace Badraan, and favourite Charlatan in more or less that order while Beauty is Truth drifted out and raced at the back of the field. Within the first 100 metres of the race, Scenic Warrior rolled in causing a bad check for Czar of Romance and Charlatan.

Perfect Soul brought the field into the straight but it was clear that Southern Emperor, who had a trouble free passage after walking off the gates, collared the front runner at the distance post. The PLACERVILLE (USA) - MYSTIC DANCER progeny then went clear of the field to triumph with Charlatan coming from way behind to take the second spot ahead of Czar of Romance and Turf Striker. By virtue of this runaway win, Southern Emperor has proved that he is adept handling soft as well as hard surfaces as he holds the record for the best timing for a mile in the country. His progress during the winter till the time he graduates to the Indian Derby will be watched with great interest.

In an upset show, the 20 to 1 shot Visionist (Vinod Shinde) tracked Thoughts N Action for the best part of the Bangalore Turf Club Trophy over 1400 metres for horses rated 80 and above, the supporting event of the day. As the race came to a boil, the WARRSHAN(USA) - STAR PROFILE sailed clear of the late finishing Foswell to score with Virat ending in the money ahead of Maddox and Thoughts N Action. The market trio of Nickel Chrome, Jersey Girl and Wind of Soul were not spotted at the busy end. Srinath did not want to take any chance with the appalling going and preferred to complete the formality of going through the motions of completing the seven furlong trip.

The consistent 6 to 1 shot Raphire (A Imran Khan) won the Gayatri Devi Memorial Trophy over a mile for horses rated 60 and above. The DON MICHELETTO(GB) - GRAN CANARIA progeny raced in the third slot as Spark of Beauty and Chronicle called the shots. In pouring rain and a slushy track, Raphire came in five wide and then devoured ground to register a facile win with Sussex Downs taking the third spot behind Spark of Beauty and ahead of Chronicle. Favourite Wind Tunnel ran a poor race to be a poor fifth.

The speedy 4 to 1 shot Jewel Lady (P S Chouhan) hit the front and made every post a winning one to claim the upper division of the Bottolonda Trophy over a sprint for horses rated 00 to 25. The DIFFIDENT(FR) - CADENZA progeny trained by Warren Singh, who saddled a winner after a long gap this season, was clear of Saphira and Red Bud while favourite Gambit ended in the ruck. Sailing Through and Yourescintillating were withdrawn.

The lower division of the same race was won by the 8 to 1 shot Dominica (I. Chisty). The SENURE(USA) - BARBADOS SKIES progeny hit the front and the race was over a long way from home with Golden Time, favourite Encourager and Raja's pet finishing behind in that order.

Fresh from his successful ride in the Derby, Sreekanth who replaced Chouhan on the Warren Singh trainee Mark of Genius bagged the upper division of the Seetharam Mudaliar Memorial Trophy over a sprint for horses rated 40 to 65. The DIFFIDENT(FR) - AWARENESS progeny tracked the speedy favourite Scenic Blast and Huckleberry Finn in the third spot but as they swung in for home, Mark Of Genius was the better travelling horse and won well with Brigade's Supreme flashing late to be third ahead of Huckleberry Finn. Wild Nexus was withdrawn.

Paying Rs 2003 on a tenner for win and Rs 150 on a tenner for place on the Tote, Hackett (Babu Singh) won the lower division of the same race to cause the biggest upset in racing in recent times at any centre. The Amit Caddy ward by DIFFIDENT(FR) - AFFIRMEDFRIENDSHIP raced in the fourth or fifth spot and then shot through a dream opening on the rails to win from Time Flies and favourite Mountain Splendor.

The consistent Azetic Star (John) finally brought the baton home when winning the upper division of the R M Puttanna Memorial Trophy over 1400 metres for horses rated 20 to 45. Racing a handy second till the turn, Azetic Star, REBUTTAL(USA) - G WAITIN ON O (USA) shot into the lead and kept going to win from a late finishing Deep Blue Sea and Natural View with favourite Bronzino ending a tame fourth.

The lower division of the same race was claimed by favourite Tony Montana (S K Paswan). The OATH(IRE) - SOUTHERN GODDESS progeny shifted in soon after the start, took charge of the field and then drifted to the outer fringes of the race track at the finish but still finished a distance ahead of the rest. Cherry Hinton and Rakshita ended behind in that order.

Tracking Maverical till the turn, Click (G Adrash) won the D H Dasappa Memorial Trophy over 1400 metres for horses rated 20 to 45. The MR MELLON(USA) - VIVIENNE progeny kept favourite Taylor Made at bay while A Game To Remember ended third ahead of the tiring Maverical while favourite Inspirator was a poor fifth. Click thus obliged a quiet touch in the hands of a jockey whose last win is difficult to trace.
