C V G K Kishore trained Tremendous lived up to his name with an emphatic performance in the 1400 metres S Rajashekar Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Wednesday’s Mysore races. Tremendous came from way off the pace in the final furlong and sailed past the front-running Poet to record a repeat win in identical fashion.

Poet was expected to make amends and was accorded the status of being the favourite. There were at least four horses which looked capable of winning. Saladin obviously belonged to the group of better performed horses and had his own share of supporters. Saladin led the field into the final furlong before fading out, giving way to Poet to take charge. However, it was clear for anyone panning the field that the winner would be the one making the move from way behind going by the manner in which the progeny of Sedgefield was devouring ground. Tremendous came up with such a powerful run that in a trice he had gone past the front-runner and won pulling up by a widening margin of three lengths. Excelonce and Ontime closed with a rush but had to settle for the slots behind the favourite.

V Apachu trained Kazuri had the clearance to be a serious contender in the race and the progeny of Glory of Dancer who had always obliged whenever her connections showed intent, once again proved her mettle with a start to finish win in the 1200 metres Kutta Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The seven-year-old mare led in the hands of Imran Chisty and held on gamely to thwart the late rally of Abderus to win at nourishing odds. Zidaan held off Sky Jet to take the third place while Be Ready, after being prominent well into the straight weakened to go out of the frame. Lesser fancied Majestic Queen from the stables of trainer Feroz M Khan prevailed in a cluster finish to land the spoils in the lower division of the race. Majestic Queen led from the start and despite drifting out under pressure close home, managed to keep the lead and went past the post barely managing to keep the lead from the late-rallying Malkia who flew home only to miss the berth by agonizingly close margin. Bonfire who broke off level this time out, shaped as the big threat for the front-runner before Malkia showed up. Bonfire ended up a close third. Tobin had all the chances but failed to produce that bit extra and ended up fourth not far from the winner.

Imran Chisty who recently tied for the jockeys’ championship stakes at Mauritius was in his elements booting home a treble. Chisty drove out Oceana to prevail in the 1200 metres Splash Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Oceana who had also won last time out, was available to long odds as Perfecto appeared to be the best bet to win the race. Chisty had Oceana race behind pace-setter Atlantis before pushing the lesser fancied runner to take charge in the homestretch. Oceana built up a useful cushion going into the final furlong which held her in good stead as Perfecto and Waterfall charged home with powerful but late bids. Monnappa trained Time Always pulled off a thrilling win in the lower division of the race with Arshad Alam in the saddle. Time Always was under pressure throughout the straight by Sans Frontiers but even as the front-runner looked safe, El Dorado in the middle and Anonymous from way off the pace came home with strong efforts made Time Always vulnerable. However, the winning post came to the rescue of the front-runner.

Girinath trained Safe Bet was another of those quietly fancied winners at nourishing odds. Imran Chisty had Safe Bet dictate the pace from the start in the 1400 metres Kovalam Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 and the five-year-old gelding, despite drifting out in the closing stages of the race, had enough power to win by a widening margin of five lengths. Lightning Touch was second best ahead of Cereza. Jockey Amyn Merchant who rarely finds himself on a winning horse, was astride Cyclops who led all the way and easily staved off the late rally of Zoe to win the lower division of the race as a well backed runner. Eudora too showed some spark while finishing third.
