M K Jadhav trained Themis won the Gr 2 C N Wadia Gold Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday’s Mumbai races in an excellent timing of two minutes 28.21 seconds which was the best for this distance for this season. The manner of victory suggested that the filly possibly missed out making an impact in classics due to inadequacies in training.

Themis was always rated as a horse of classic potential. But the filly never lived up to expectation and recorded her first win since winning a race during the Bangalore Summer Season. Because she had run in good company and enjoyed the pull in weights against a modest lot of horses, Themis was fancied to have a decisive say in the race as there was always belief that she had underperformed despite the obvious potential.

Square Moon led the field with B Fifty Two in close proximity while Sandesh on Themis chose to settle the horse in the rear with Supreme General for company. B Fifty Two displaced Square Moon from the lead with two furlongs left in the race. Sandesh made his move on Themis after travelling deep into the straight and the progeny of Lord Shanakill came up with a tremendous burst of speed which took her easily past B Fifty Two. The filly stretched out well to win by a margin of over three lengths. B Fifty Two stayed put to take the second position ahead of Supreme General who despite making a rally from behind, did not have the stuff to make an impact on the result. Big Sur was a disappointing fourth.

Pesi Shroff trained Checkmate was checkmated in the 1200 metres Indian Navy Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The trainer is always in a hurry to exploit the quota of these horses before the season ends as he targets fresh set of horses for the next season. This was perhaps the reason why Checkmate was running for the third time in a month after winning twice in succession. Since he had won last time out with a late dash, one thought that the sprint could be his undoing as he was taking on tougher opponents in their comfort zone. The speedy Slam Dunk went at a good clip in front and led into the final furlong. Chaplin who has always produced his best over a sprint, pounced on the front-runner and then stormed clear to win with a great deal of ease. Star Comrade rallied well to take the second spot ahead of Slam Dunk who held off Check Mate for the third place.

Pradeep Chouhan attempted runaway tactics on Artus who was bidding to record an encore in the 2000 metres Jayaramdas Patel Gold Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 but the fancied runner slackened approaching the final furlong. Khartoum who was in a handy position, managed to overhaul the front-runner after a brief tussle and clinched the issue quite capably by a shade over a length. Happy Birthday was third seven lengths adrift of the runner-up.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Between The Waters got an excellent run along the rails and the progeny of Surf Rider quickened well in the final furlong to go past Baymax to win the 1000 metres Nadia Mary Homi Wadia Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Red Carnation picked up some steam towards the close to finish second best ahead of the long-time leader Baymax.

Bezan Chenoy trained Congressional recorded a long overdue win in the 1400 metres Mulraj Goculdas Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. After Ship Rock led the field into the straight, Trevor pushed Congressional to take charge in the homestretch. The progeny of Razeen quickened well to go clear of late-rallying Governor General who necked out Celtic Prince for the runner-up berth.

The run benefit helped Altamash Ahmed trained Augustus Caesar who won the 1400 metres R J Kolah Trophy, a race maiden three-year-olds. August Caesar led from the start with his main threats gracing the rear. The favourite had a handy lead when Bushtops and Merlin began to make their bid from way behind and hence was untroubled when sailing past the winning post.

Sandesh’s power-packed riding enabled Massimo to record a narrow win over favourite Bottega Louie in the 1600 metres Angelique Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Massimo led from the start but in the final furlong was strongly pressed by Bottega Louie who shaped to overhaul the front-runner. However, Sandesh kept riding out Massimo relentlessly which enabled the long shot to pull off a neck victory over the on money favourite.
