The proceedings on Sunday were dull but it was lifted by the unique statistical feat of trainer Pesi Shroff who saddled his 1000th winner through Khartoum in the opening race of the day. Pesi thus got the unique distinction in being the only one in Indian racing history to have booted home more than 1000 winners and saddling 1000 winners.

An incredible feat of 11 individual trainers’ championships at Mumbai and three at Pune embellish his record. He has about 150 graded races 54 classics and 48 Grade 1 wins which highlight the quality of wins. There is no doubt that horses make champions of trainers but to achieve this feat, it also takes long hours of hard work in the stable for the trainer to exploit the full potential of the horses. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that Pesi spends more time in the stables than in his own house!

Be that as it may, Khartoum had all the credentials to record an encore though, for some strange reasons, Noshir Cama trained Admo was quoted at very cramped odds. Lady Be Good was at the helm with Admo in the second position while Khartoum was in the third position. Rounding the final turn, Khartoum smoothly cruised past the long-time leader even as Admo was sending distressing signals, losing pace. Khartoum then stormed clear to win by a margin of over fourth lengths in the hands of jockey N S Parmar. Jaeger Bomb ran on from behind to get the second position ahead of the favourite who flopped miserably. The victory of Khartoum was something to cherish for trainer Pesi as it enabled the trainer to achieve a significant milestone in about 13 years.

Shazaan Shah trained Run Forest Run had all the credentials to win the 1200 metres Banarsidas Million, a race for three-year-olds as the progeny of Excellent Art had lost by a whisker in his last effort. However, the surge of money on Westeros saw Run Forest Run end up as the second favourite. Apprentice jockey Zeeshan had Run Forest Run track the front-running Enchanted before getting the second favourite to storm clear in the final furlong. Run Forest Run won with a measure of comfort from Enchanted while Westeros picked up steam when the cause had been lost and had to be satisfied with the third slot.

The progeny of Dean’s Kitten has shown a great relish for long distance races. After Khartoum won over a mile in the day’s opener, Gold Bond recorded an encore in the 1800 metres Vibrant Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Gold Bond was at the helm well into the straight and broke clear to win easily from Counsellor who was the only one who was in the chase. Silver Edge was third a distance behind. Favourite Harrier rapidly fell back after entering the homestretch to finish down the field.

Apprentice jockey Zeeshan who enjoyed a great season on Mansoor Shah’s horses, however, was found wanting on two favourites. On Fine Tune, he managed to win by a narrow margin but lost the race on an objection. In the other, he failed to add punch to his finish which resulted in favourite Optimum losing to a long shot. Fine Tune who had recorded a narrow win last time out, was backed spiritedly in the 1000 metres Shara Belle Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Fine Tune managed to hold Wind Craft at bay but in doing so, under the right-handed whipping of the jockey, the horses drifted out taking the latter out. Fine Tune also made contact with Wind Craft on two occasions. The resultant objection was upheld by the Stewards. Malavika was third.

Shazaan Shah trained Optimum was backed down as half money favourite to win the 1200 metres Viscol Plate, a race for horses rated 1 to 26. Star Anise who managed to overhaul the front-running Golden Tower surged ahead with a furlong left in the race. Optimum joined with a flourishing run. The two fought out the rest of the trip but under apprentice jockey Amit, the 10 to 1 shot Star Anise held off Optimum to win by a neck. Golden Tower stayed on to finish third.

Jockey Anil Baandal who rarely wins races, was astride a winner in Star Ace who won the 1400 metres Laurita Plate, a race for horses rated 1 to 26. The fancied Eternal Dancer took over the running in earnest inside the final two furlongs but was under intense pressure from Master Sergeant who went ahead inside the final 50 metres. However, there was an unexpected twist to the tale with Star Ace showing up on the wide outside and prevailing by a long neck. Eternal Dancer was third.
