Faisal Abbas trained Southpaw who had struck great form and had recorded a runaway win on the last occasion, maintained the awesome form when swamping the opposition in the 1000 metres Trainers Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, the feature event of the penultimate day’s racing of the long-winding Mumbai Racing Season on Saturday. Southpaw had the rest beaten for speed right from the start.

The progeny of Bushranger has struck form at the fag end of the season. The first win was a matter of fact, the second one an emphatic one. As such, the form was good enough to beat a modest lot of horses that lined up which included Princess P and Miss Moneypenny who had lost by a whisker on the last occasion. While apprentice jockey Amit had South Paw lead comfortably in front, without being hassled by anyone, Princess P who veered in at the jump, disturbed a host of horses on her inside. South Paw came into the straight well clear of the rest and kept on increasing the lead to eventually win by a margin of over four lengths. Princess P chased without hope and occupied the runner-up berth ahead of Miss Moneypenny.

The progeny of first season stallion Strong Suit, Eden Rock looked in good shape to have a strong say in the 1000 metres Rajcoomar Gujadhur Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Jockey Zervan brought the Manjri Stud Farm bred Eden Rock to settle behind pace-setting Julio Cesaro from the wide outside draw. When asked for an effort, Eden Rock picked up steam, easily overhauled the front-runner and sped away to win by a widening margin of five lengths over Fire Flame who necked out Chezza for the runner-up berth. The well-bred Oriana was in the betting but was never in the hunt and finished down the field. The lower division of the race saw on money favourite Enchanted bite the dust. Quoted at less than half money, Enchanted was taken on a start to finish mission and looked to be on course but closer home was caught up with by long shot Charles Bridge. The latter who was loitering in the penultimate position at the final turn, found spaces on the inside to come into strong contention. Charles Bridge got the measure of the favourite in the shadow of the post. Shivalik Queen who had given chase to the favourite weakened to finish third.

Imtiaz Sait trained Nextstar was well fancied to win the 1000 metres Step By Step Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. There was strong support for Bidstone Hill to improve on the previous effort. Pradeep Chouhan who has obtained a stay against his suspension, had Nextstar dictate the pace from the start and the progeny of Stern Opinion had enough legs to finish comfortably ahead. There was a cluster finish behind with Royal Ace snatching the second place from Montana and favourite Bidstone Hill who weakened after going in chase of the eventual winner.

A M Jadhav trained long shot Golden Eclipse flew home along the rails to contain a host of contenders who were in with a chance in the 1400 metres Racing Journalists Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. There was a cavalry charge at the finish with as many as five horses finishing in a line. Golden Eclipse pulled it off at the expense of Cosimo, Relentless Pursuit and long-time leader Lady In Red. Rain Dance who lost ground at the start also finished strongly and was within striking distance of those who finished in front of her. Favourite Bakhtawar was never in the hunt and eventually finished dismally.

Apprentice jockey G Amit rode the well-backed Rio De Janeiro to an easy win in the 120 metres Forest Hills Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Adams Beginning led into the final furlong but had no answer when Rio De Janeiro swooped on her. Rio De Janeiro then stormed clear to win by a margin of over three lengths over Adams Beginning. Eternal Dancer saved place money.

Magan Singh Jodha trained Dazzle N Daze recorded a comprehensive win in the 1600 metres Round Off Plate, a race for horses rated 1 to 26. Whoopsidaisy made a start to finish attempt but going into the final furlong, was strongly challenged by Dazzle N Daze. The front-runner could not hold on to the lead for long and Dazzle N Daze skipped clear to record a win at nourishing odds. Sweeping Move made a late rally to finish third.
