C V G K Kishore trained Exclusive Wind who had made a late charge and finished an eye-catching second in his last effort, made amends in the 1600 metres Deccan Chronicle Gold Cup, a race for horses rated 74 and above, which featured the extra day’s races of the monsoon racing season at Hyderabad on Sunday. The pace of the race suited Exclusive Wind and the five-year-old gelding had a firm grip on the race in the final furlong.

Horse of the season Phenomenal Cruise was expected to maintain his winning ways and started as favourite. However, he lost supporters close to race time with Destined Dynamite backed with conviction to have a decisive say. Exclusive Wind was available at long odds. Magical Skill set a fast pace and led by lengths with Exclusive Wind in the second position while Destined Dynamite was in the penultimate position. Exclusive Wind quickly tackled Magical Skill in the straight, shot ahead and established a good cushion going into the final furlong. The hard-ridden Destined Dynamite kicked in from the back of the pack but the leeway was too much to cover and he had to settle for the second place. Phenomenal Cruise who went in chase of the front-runner weakened to finish third.

Satyanarayana trained Indian Dreams who did not have the luck of the race in his last run, had plenty of it in the 1400 metres Golconda Empress Plate, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. Longshot Ikigai from the stables of trainer Anant Vatsalya, which had the services of newly apprenticed Afroz who was riding in a race for the first time, led from the start after initially veering out at the jump out. Ikigai had a good lead when Indian Dreams began to make his assault. Ikigai fought on relentlessly but Indian Dreams managed to nose out the front-runner in the final stride of the race with jockey Kuldeep Singh going flat out on the heavily supported favourite. There was inspired betting on Mighty Swing but there was no swing in her fortunes as she struggled for speed and finished poorly.

Prasad Raju trained Buddy Brothers had the credentials to get the support that he got in the 1400 metres Fire Arch Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Hope Is Eternal was another who got good support in the betting ring but did not justify the enthusiasm of her backers in the betting ring. Buddy Brothers led from the start and was not under pressure to retain his lead right through the race and won by a margin of three lengths. Tough Sussex headed Platinum Classz to grab the third position.

Donald Netto trained Bayrd was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1600 metres Teegala Sulochana Reddy Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 42 to 62. The favourite was sluggish at the start and thereafter did not give hope of justifying the big betting that he attracted. Lesser fancied Surprise Party from trainer Satheesh’s yard led from the start and had enough legs to reach the winning post ahead of the rest. Somerset finished second ahead of San Vinto.

Ravinder Singh trained Indian Sprint won the 1400 metres Racing Ruler Trophy, a race for horses rated up to 30 at lucrative odds. Last start winner Ultimate Risk and Cash For Rank were the preferred horses. Cash For Rank had the first run on his opponents going into the final furlong but closer home Ultimate Risk looked capable of pulling it off. But both these fancied runners were shocked by the late flourish shown by the lesser fancied Indian Sprint who finished with a rush to nail Ultimate Risk close home.

Satheesh trained Columbus who had come down a lot in scales was backed to return to winning ways in the 1600 metres Successor Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 46. Columbus led in earnest and fought on relentlessly with Charlie Brown before losing out in the final moments of the race. Mahathi nosed out Vijay’s Harmony to snatch the third place.
