Bipin Salvi trained Master of Universe floored the opposition in the 1200 metres Sir Charles Forbes Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of a lacklustre card of seven events that were gone through on Friday at Mumbai. The Mysore challenger who had won twice impressively at his home centres at long intervals benefitted by the forward that he had on the local track and asserted his supremacy in emphatic fashion.

Last start winner Gazino, Kaneez and Excellent Gold had the support of the punters to have a bold show. Sandesh had Excellent Gold lead the field into the final furlong at which point, the progeny of Excellent Art was sorted by the other runners. Gazino and Pure Zinc then got busy, but their hopes were dashed by Master of Universe who came home with a big effort on the wide outside in the hands of regular partner N Jodha to floor the battling duo in front to record an upset win. Master of Universe is no doubt a quality horse, but physical niggles have ensured that the five-year-old is raced very sparingly.

Altaf Hussain trained Silver Flames recorded an impressive win in the 1000 metres Purple Lifestyle Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Stablemate Track Star was backed with conviction to make a winning debut, but the favourite struggled from the beginning and eventually finished a tame third. Silver Flames who was off to a sluggish start, improved places swiftly in the stretch and in the end was full of running when overwhelming Warrior Clan who shaped like a winner. Silver Flames appears a good type of a youngster judging by the quality of the win, with the horse showing zest despite Akshay Gaikwad hardly having to do anything aggressive on the three-year-old.

Sanjay Kolse trained Sagittarius was well backed to win the 2400 metres Trance Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. On sheer consistency, Sagittarius indeed had a good chance. Sandesh took Sagittarius on a start to finish mission and though the fancied runner looked vulnerable in the final furlong, he dug deep into his reserves and held off the late challenge of Gdansk by half a length. The latter reportedly burst his blood vessels which could have helped the front-runner to save the day. Lucky Luciano was a close third. Emotionless who was bidding for a hat-trick ran without any emotion and finished poorly.

Dallas Todywalla trained Western Front recorded an encore quite capably in the 1800 metres Vallabhdas H Adwalia Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 Rogue One led from the start and fought spiritedly when Western Front essayed a strong challenge with 200 metres left in the race. However, Western Front proved to be too superior and obliged easily in the hands of jockey Zervan. Kimberella snatched the runner-up berth from Rogue One close home.

Rehanullah Khan trained Highland Empress who had twice figured on board, managed to win the1000 metres Mid Day Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan brought Highland Empress into strong contention with a furlong left in the race and managed to get the better of Bonafide and then survived the late onslaught of Chosen One by a neck. Dancing Lanes pushed the fancied Lord Commander to the fourth place.

Sangram Joshi trained Poco Azul was well backed to repeat in the 1400 metres Emperado Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Poco Azul showed up prominently on turning for home and bounced clear in the closing stages of the race to record a handsome win in the hands of jockey Akshay. Ustad Pedro got the second position ahead of Harmony of the Sea in a close finish.

Apprentice jockey M Ayyar drove out Pleiades to win the 1200 metres Secret Halo Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Lesser fancied Isinit fought on relentlessly in the stretch before Ayyar managed to get the fancied runner to seize the initiative in the shadow of the post. Pleiades then went on to win by a length. Allegria was third more than five lengths adrift. Ebony who came in for spirited betting, made no show.
