Shiraz Sunderji trained Dandi March staved off the late rally of favourite Thailand to land the spoils in the 1200 metres Longchamp Million, the feature event of Sunday’s Mumbai races. A lacklustre card of six events was gone through with the quality of fare on offer being run-of-the-mill. Sandesh was the only professional to end the day with a double.

Thailand who had recorded an impressive debut was made the favourite ahead of Dandi March. The latter had failed to live up to expectations in his last effort after being sluggish from the gates. This time out, Dandi March was brisk from the gates and was well positioned to strike. Miss Boss and Namaqua led from the start with Dandi March and Thailand in proximity. The latter, after being well positioned, was unable to hold position and the favourite dropped back to the rear allowing Dandi March not only the benefit of the first run on his opponent but also valuable ground. Dandi March overhauled the front-running duo inside the final furlong and marched ahead. Sandesh was not required to be aggressive on the horse as Dandi March had a good cushion when Thailand charged home on the inside of him. Though the gap was covered considerably, the favourite ran out of the ground. Possibly Thailand would be better off tackling a longer trip than the one he was asked to essay. Namaqua took the third position.

Malesh Narredu trained Astounding Bay was the most experienced horse in the fray for the 1600 meters Lt Col Govind Singh (VRC) Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Astounding Bay was strongly backed ahead of Silver King to land the spoils. Jockey Yash Narredu initially struggled to settle Astounding Bay who raced keen but midway through the race the horse settled down to race on an even keel. Astounding Bay enjoyed a good lead entering the straight and with Silver King and Moriesiki struggling to pick up speed, the front-runner looked like recording an easy win. However, in the final furlong Astounding Bay though not tiring, did not pick up speed and Silver King rallied strongly along the rails but just about failed to get the better of the favourite. Moriesiki had a satisfying debut run while finishing a close third.

Favourite Sylvester just about managed to oblige expectations in the 1600 metres Brazil Cup, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Whoopsidaisy held sway for a long while in the straight before Flying Dragon shot ahead. Sandesh brought Sylvester into contention on the inside of Flying Dragon. Apprentice jockey A S Peter was unable to prevent the lesser fancied runner from drifting out and this perhaps made a critical difference to the outcome as the Adhiraj Jodha trained favourite managed to prevail by a head in the end. Whoopsidaisy stayed on to take the third position.

Nazak Chenoy trained Oracle was widely expected to win the 1000 metres Dr Govind R Gurbaxani Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 but the favourite flopped unable to change gears when the race came to a boil. Lesser fancied Poker Face was pushed to take charge early in the race and the progeny of Stern Opinion had no problem in winning the race with ease. Charging Tigress came up with a late rally to edge out True Grit who was bidding for a hat-trick from the runner-up position.

M K Jadhav trained Jetfire continued to find one better on a consistent basis. Jetfire who had run in good company was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 meters Indian Navy Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Long shot Divine Power who led from the start held off the challenge of Jetfire and went on to record a comfortable win, drawing clear in the final stages of the race. Myrcella was third.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Unimaginable who had let down huge expectations last time out, made amends in the 1000 metres Flying Brave Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Apprentice jockey Kaviraj Singh rode the winner and despite him taking the favourite all over the place, Unimaginable proved superior to the field. In the process of overhauling Speedo inside the final furlong, Unimaginable rolled over to the rails causing the latter to change course. Bee Quirky nosed out Unimaginable to the save place money.
