M K Jadhav trained Bushtops showed amazing improvement when easily accounting for favourite Adjudicate in the Gr 3 Eve Champion Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday’s Pune races. The progeny of Archipenko who had failed to live up to expectations during the last season appears to have got stronger as evidenced by the easy win though it must be conceded that he had a huge pull in weights. Racing did not run kindly for punters as long shots ruled the roost.

The performance of Bushtops indicated that he is a late bloomer. Bushtops had recorded an impressive win earlier in the season but since that win had come in an ordinary company, he was not backed with the conviction being quoted at long odds. Adjudicate was the firm favourite to record her first win on the Pune track on which where she is yet to register a win. The terms of the race definitely were against good horses like Adjudicate was set to give as many 10 kgs to a horse which was reckoned to be a classic prospect last season.

Vulcan set a decent pace followed by Sacred Roman, Caprisca while Adjudicate was in about the fourth or fifth position while N S Parmar placed Bushtops in the penultimate position. Vulcan led the field well into the straight before Suraj Narredu had Adjudicate overwhelm the front-runner. Even as Adjudicate was in the process of taking the lead, Bushtops came up with a powerful run. Bushtops surged decisively ahead with about 100 metres left in the race and won by a comfortable margin of two and quarter lengths. Vulcan stayed on to take the third position ahead of Caprisca.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Adeline prevailed in the 1200 metres P Hadow Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 in a tight finish from Harmony of the Sea and the late flashing Gentillesse. The race had an open look about it with more than three horses enjoying equal support but in the end, two of them did not figure on the board namely Gold Field and Tenerife who was more fancied than her stablemate who ended up winning. Gold Field led the field with Tenerife in the second position. Inside the final furlong, Gold Field could not sustain the foray as Adeline overhauled the front-runner and opened what turned into a winning lead. Harmony of the Sea came up with a sustained run but fell short by half a length. Gentillesse who was sluggish from the gates, warmed up to the task rather too late and though the five-year-old mare who was bidding for a hat-trick of wins produced a big effort, she fell short in the end. Tenerife finished down the field.

Jockey Trevor Patel seems to have hit a rough patch and he is surely not riding with confidence. The way he handled favourite Seventh Mile, unsure of which path to take had its own tale to tell. Lesser fancied Beemer who hit the front midway through the race after being sluggish at the start had no problem in holding off the challenge from late rallying Polaris to win the 1400 metres To The Manor Born Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Turaco too finished with purpose while Seventh Mile who changed course many times and lacked intent finished a tame fourth.

Karthik Ganapathy trained My Precious brought off a big upset in the 1600 metres Colombiana Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Apprentice jockey A Prakash was able to enjoy an uncontested lead in front on My Precious and the progeny of Excellent Art enjoyed her foray in front and went beyond the reach of the rest in the stretch to record a handsome win by a whopping margin of seven lengths after 251 days. Eight-year-old Jager Bomb ran on to finish second ahead of favourite Makhtoob. The fancied Astounding Bay lost all his chances at the gate itself by staying put there when the start was given.

Narendra Lagad trained Power of Thor chased the front-running Dazzle N Daze well into the straight before skipping clear in the final furlong to win the 2000 metres Unicorn Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Power of Thor has run as many as 54 times and won on three occasions including this win. Grand Eyes took the third position with stablemate Honourable Eyes, the favourite, making no show.

Trevor Patel got his act together while driving out Thomas Hardy to beat the front-running Dazzling Star close home to win the 1200 metres Cabriolet Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Dazzling Star led from the start and had a good break in the final furlong, but the finishing burst of Thomas Hardy ensured that the day’s only favourite would come through. Julio Cesaro ran on late to occupy the third position.
