Onederboy has it easy in the Independence Cup

Trainer Aashay’s less fancied runner, Onderboy (Dhanu Deora-up), provided the up-coming young trainer with the prestigious race; the 1,400m Independence Cup; which happened to be Tuesday’s feature event. The afternoon also witnessed a number of smart gambles being landed; leaving the satchel men in a quandary as trainer Vikash Jaiswal’s Dancing Prince (app. Sujit Paswan) and Manvendra Singh’s Beat The Bank (Mudassar Nazar) delivered the goods to justify tonnes of wagering. Vikash also made a big killing on his charge, Dil Mange More (Vinay Jaiswal) and he was the only trainer to finish the afternoon with a brace of wins.

What a transformation of form by a horse re-named as Onederboy, after migrating, last year, from western India as Hopeilious. The horse went on to provide Deora with a smart victory, last winter but the prized moment followed the pair a trifle late.

Onederboy is known to get into his rhythm late and Deora made no mistake as James McKeown’s pair of Novicov (Hindu) and Apalachee (app. P. Vikram), along with Bharath Singh’s Lumenac (Neeraj Rawal) made most of the running. Inside the last furlong walked in Onederboy to seal the issue, well before the winning-post. In the same race, trainer Harvinder Bath’s 17/10 favourite, Marbella (C. Alford) literally planted at the gates to make it a no contest for the winner while Vijay’s 7/2 runner, After Shock (Nikhil Naidu) was not in the race in the early half but displayed some acceleration inside the last 200m of the race.

In the day’s opener, the 1,100m Mr. Darcy Handicap, Vikash’s Dil Mange More was a quiet fancy -- backed from 12/1 to 6/1 -- and the four-year-old faced very little problem from trainer Sarfraz Khan’s 11/4 favourite, Artificial (app. P. Tajeshwar), who had build up a winning lead, 200m from home, before taken by a surprise by Dil Mange More.

Things started happening from the second race onwards when Vikash’s Dancing Prince started getting one sided support, forcing bookmakers to balance odds right from the word go. From 9/2 to 6/4, was a massive blow but they hoped that the apprentice may commit some mistake over the 1,200m journey.
Nothing of that sort happened; until 300m from home as the favourite started drifting out of the straight course while making it a pillar-to-post effort. Yet the favourite hung on to his slender lead to the dismay of those praying for Dancing Prince’s defeat.

Manvendra’s Beat The Bank added to bookmakers woes in the 1,400m Immaculate Handicap, half-an-hour later. The Saamid filly, too, was backed down to even-money from 7/2 but just about lasted out to beat trainer Farley Rodrigues’s 10/1 chance, Gramercy Park (Vikram). Farley’s runner had build up a long lead from the very start of the race but was beaten at the post to further dampen the spirit of bookies.

The layer of odds had something to cheer about the victory of trainer Raunak Singh’s long shot, Louboutin (Arshad Alam) who made every post of the 1,400m Super Sunrise Plate a winning one. The Air Support filly’s winter form was too poor and the trainer deserves Kudos for taking her to a level against an opposition boasting Classic credentials.

Vijay’s Arjuna (Hindu), however, justified his 9/4 favouritism, winning the 1,600m Aya Toofan Handicap comfortably from Admiral Hatsu (Nazar). Hindu allowed Bath’s Gold Bond a marginal advantage till the halfway mark before hitting the front to score by shade over a length.
Vijay’s record against Arti has always been poor. Therefore, it hardly came as a surprise when the Arti’s 9/4 favourite, Fire Opal (Alford), had an easy measure of the field, leaving Raunak’s Descartes and Vijay’s equally fancied Inca (Naidu) to fight for minor placings in the 1,800m Colours Handicap.
