Pesi Shroff trained Sacred Roman who had a trial run 18 days ago proved too good in the 2800 metres Byculla Club Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Thursday’s Mumbai races. Incidentally, the last win recorded by Sacred Roman was nearly a year ago in the 3000 metres Stayers Cup and the manner of his victory suggested that the longer trips suit him the best.

Jockey Leigh Roche took Sacred Roman to the front and enjoyed an uncontested lead of many lengths all through the race. Midway through the race, he could also give a breather to the son of Holy Roman Emperor who did not show any signs of weakening all through the race. Sacred Roman came into the straight a few lengths clear of a hotly chasing Raees who failed to make an impression on the front-runner who kicked on merrily to win by three lengths. Vulcan ran on to be a tame third.

The highly regarded Mozart from the stables of Pesi Shroff had gone winless for 604 days possibly to some niggle or the other. After a good forward run, the got abroad asserted his supremacy in the 1200 metres Air Force Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Dandi March was the firm favourite with Mozart available at nourishing odds. N S Parmar had Mozart lead all the way and the progeny of Dream Ahead spurted away from favourite Dandi March in the final furlong to record an emphatic win. Gallantry ran on from way behind to save place money. The odds on Night Hunt remained the same which indicated that he was not being backed enthusiastically and despite an impressive win to back his credentials, he ran way below par.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Galloping Goldmine lost the battle to Rainbow Trout on the racetrack but managed to win the same in the Stewards room. Galloping Goldmine and Rainbow Trout waged a stiff battle for supremacy all the way in the final furlong with the former managing to prevail by a whisker in the 2000 metres Ferrari Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Galloping Goldmine was slightly hampered in the closing stages of the race and Trevor Patel was able to lodge a successful objection against Sandesh who rode the winner. Fleur De Lys was a long way third.

The 1000 metres Nadia Mary Homi Wadia Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-old saw Vishal Gaikwad trained Soaring High make a winning debut at big odds. The betting thrust was on Rising Sun who was expected to go one better. Rising Sun led in earnest but inside the final furlong was overhauled by El Capitan who shaped to win. However, Soaring High made a big rally from way off the pace and covered ground rapidly along the rails to nail the front-runner in the shadow of the post. Rising Sun weakened to finish third.

Both the divisions of the 1200 metres Magic Touch Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category, went to the trainer-jockey combination of Noshir Cama and Pradeep Chauhan. The Division I of the race was claimed by lesser fancied Direwolf who measured the front-running Red Carnation inside the final furlong and had enough reserves when Golden Seal came chasing him. In contrast, the lower division of the race was claimed with more ease with the heavily supported Kalina leading all the way and winning by a widening margin of five lengths over Adams Beginning and On Va Danser.

There was a rare dead heat for the first place in the 1400 metres Avantage Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Honourable Eyes had the lead going into the final furlong, but closer home Saffron Flower came up with a big effort, caught up with the front-runner and went past the post locked together. The magic eye too could not separate these two runners and a dead heat ensued. Golden Eclipse was a well-beaten third. The lower division of the race was claimed by Karthik Ganapathy trained Solo Mission who took over the running from the wide outside draw within the first furlong and led all the way comfortably and held off the late bid of Nusrat. Run Happy edged past Cray Cray to return rich dividends on a place bet.
