Adhiraj Jodha trained Vulcan was driven out by jockey Sandesh to win the 2400 metres Cricket Club of India Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Sunday’s Mumbai races. Vulcan whose had last won 155 days was lucky in that apprentice jockey Prakash was unable to exploit the full potential of Sagittarius.
Apprentice jockey Prakash had Sagittarius lead from the start followed by Momentum, Magistero and Vulcan. Momentum began to send distress signals approaching the final bend and gradually bell behind to eventually finish a dismal last. Vulcan took over the running from Sagittarius inside the final 300 metres and opened a comfortable lead but began to tire out as the latter came up with a second wind and threw a renewed challenge. However, Vulcan held on to win by ¾ of a length as Prakash was unable to add punch on Sagittarius who seemed to have more energy than the jockey who guided him.

Pesi Shroff trained Nekhbet pulled off a dramatic win in the 1600 metres Bombay Presidency Radio Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. After Beemer led into the final furlong, Nekhbet who was in the second position was overhauled by Mishka’s Pride who bounced clear. Nekhbet, in the hands of apprentice jockey K S Kaviraj came up with a second wind and managed to nose out Mishka’s Pride in the concluding stride of the race. Favourite Tasman who was bidding to record his second straight win rallied late and finished a close third, a short head ahead of pace-setter Beemer.
Shroff had a quick double when Eagleinthesky improved on his second to Golden Era resolutely staving off the challenge of favourite Galloping Goldmine to land the spoils in the 2000 metres National Sports Club of India Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Eagleinthesky was winning after a longish wait of 419 days having missed more than two seasons of racing. Galloping Goldmine shaped like a winner when he challenged the front running Eagleinthesky who looked vulnerable. However, Eagleinthesky dug into his reserves and managed to stave off the bid of the favourite by ¾ of a length. Lucky Luciano was third more than four lengths adrift.
Altamash Ahmed trained Palomar who had flopped in his last outing recorded a thrilling win over Guarnerius with a splendid rally from way off the pace in the 1200 metres Bombay Gymkhana Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Mikayla’s Pride who had gone fighting narrowly last time out led from the start and had the lead going into the final furlong. But she looked vulnerable when a host of horses charged from behind. Memorable Eyes led for a while but closer to home Guarnerius overhauled him and shaped to pull it off but in a dramatic twist to the race, Palomar came up with his patented late surge to pull off a neck verdict at lucrative odds.
Shiraz Sunderji trained Intense Approach who had the benefit of two runs including the one at Hyderabad was quoted at cramped odds to win the 1200 metres Willington Sports Club Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Jockey Nicky Mackay had Intense Approach take over the running in the final furlong and the favourite stormed clear to eventually win by a margin of eight lengths over Accenture who covered good ground from way off the pace to take the second position. Curfew beat the long-time leader Fairmont to take the third position.
Pesi Shroff led in the third winner of the day through last start winner Anatevka who managed to neck out Frieze in the waning yards of the race to win the 1200 metres Malabar Hill Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Long shot Frieze took over the running inside the final 350 metres and waged a stiff battle all the way in the final furlong with Anatevka on whom apprentice jockey Kaviraj gave a confident ride. Jetfire was third some lengths behind.
David Allan aggressively drove out Silver Flames to get the better of Joplin close home in the 1000 metres Garware Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Mystic Bay and Silver Flames were received support in equal measure in the betting ring. After Impala set the pace and weakened at the top of the straight, Pradeep Chouhan pushed Joplin to take charge. Silver Flames went in hot pursuit. These two horses fought the length of the final furlong before Silver Flames necked out the front-runner in the closing strides of the race. Last start winner Mystic Bay was a beaten cause in the final furlong, unable to find an extra gear and was a tame third.
Altaf Hussain trained Define Hunt was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 metres Otters Club Trophy, a race for horses in the lowest category. Lesser fancied Luminosity threatened to play spoilsport leading aggressively from the start and carrying the lead deep into the stretch. Divine Hunt had considerable leeway to cover but fortunately for the backers of the favourite, Night Hunt responded well to the urgings of jockey Trevor Patel and managed to carry the weight of the money by overhauling the front-runner in the shadow of the post. Macau ran on to take the third position.
