Racing Bonanza on cards on Invitation Cup day
The Indian Turf Invitation day races will be held on Sunday at Hyderabad thanks to the efforts of race horse breeders of India who have collectively pooled in Rs 75 lakhs in order to ensure that the four Graded 1 races are held without any break. The day will feature four Grade 1 races, the first time such a thing has ever happened in India. Though the fields are smaller in most races, the quality of the contestants is of the highest order. Manitou won the Indian Turf Invitation Cup the first time it was held at Hyderabad in 1978. His dam Dusty Marta traced to the well known broodmare Paraffin on her tail female line. Major Pradeep K. Mehra remarked in 1991 that it was high time the Sprinters’ Cup was re-named as the Common Land(GB) Cup. Including Klairon Gold who won the race twice, Major Mehra’s stallion had led the sires list for the race since its inception in 1979 with six winners till then. Queen Of Banks was bought in the 1960`s at Kolkata by trainers R.M. Puttanna and M.B. Mangalorkar for just Rs. 15,000. When sent to Mossy Bear, the Kolkata triple crown winner Puttanna had trained, she foaled Kitty Bank, Mossy Banks and Merlin. Read
