Siege Perilous destroys a dispirited opposition

  September 29 , 2022

Saqlain had no hesitation in taking Siege Perilous to the front. The favourite enjoyed the uncontested lead and kept on expanding the lad in the stretch to eventually check-in by a widening margin of eight lengths over Coorg Regiment who ran on to take the second position ahead of Aberlour. Whizzo who chased the front-runner in the early part lost steam in the homestretch and faded out of contention.

Michael Eshwer trained Sparkles won the 1400 metres Dupont Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Drusilla came for solid support but the punters were in shock when the favourite was stranded at the gates and lost all her chances. The Stewards would do well to ban horses which make a habit of not getting a good start however impressive their mock race jump-outs maybe if they consistently repeat the habit in races. Apprentice jockey Arul had Sparkles chase Imperius well into the straight before getting aggressive. Sparkles gained the upper hand with a furlong left in the race and bounced clear to win with a measure of comfort from Imperius who stayed on to take the second position ahead of Achook.

Warren Singh who had found winners hard to come by in the last few years has of late been winning fairly regularly. Sea Blush was one such horse which came in for support to the exclusion of the rest in the 1400 metres Belur Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 25. Sea Blush lacked the early speed and was settled in the rear group but apprentice jockey Saqlain did not panic as he worked his way steadily and angled out inside the final 350 metres to get a clear run. Thereafter, Sea Blush bridged the gap with a strong effort and got the better of front-running Article Fifteen in the closing strides of the race to land the spoils as a well-backed favourite. Dawn Rising was third.

Saqlain rounded off his tally for the day with victory on the wayward Del Mar in the 1200 metres Karapur Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Donna Bella brought the field into view with Del Mar in hot chase. Del Mar easily overhauled the front-runner in the straight but began to veer out dangerously onto the outer track and was in danger of slipping onto the sand track. However, Saqlain did not panic and rode out the horse to extract a neck verdict from late rallying Extraordinary. Donna Bella stayed on to finish third.

Prithviraj-trained Skyfire came in for one-sided support to win the 1200 metres Mandya Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Anakin lost supporters and the odds too drifted out. In keeping with the market expectations, Skyfire had no problem in winning by a margin of four lengths in the hands of apprentice jockey Vivek. Skyfire led from the start and got stronger in the final furlong to win by a widening margin over Anakin who found the front-runner too hot to handle. Embosom was third.

Kiran Rai drove out Girinath-trained Perfect Empress to get the better of Coyote Girl in the dying moments of the race to win the 1600 metres Hotel R R R Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Coyote Girl showed up prominently at the top of the straight and steadily established what looked like a sizeable winning lead. However, Perfect Empress came up with a late rally which enabled the fancied runner to get the better of Coyote Girl close to home. Parker was third.

Favourite Prince Corporate had stolen a march over the rest in the 1400 metres Lokapavani Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 but the front-runner slackened close to home. A strongly ridden Viva La Vida, in the hands of jockey Zeeshan, managed to overhaul the front-runner in the dying moments of the race to win the race as the only non-fancied runner to win during the course of the day`s action. Viva La Vida returned a dividend of over 50 to 1 on the tote. Highland Park was third.
