Two races called off at Mysore as trainers go on strike

  September 29 , 2022

The last two races scheduled for Friday at Mysore were called off after the trainers refused to saddle their horses in protest against the enquiry initiated against trainer S M Johnson including taking his mobile phone for scrutiny. For the record, two of the horses saddled by Johnson failed in their respective races as strong favourites.

The Stewards asked the trainer for his mobile phone to check the call records and the messages. According to the Chairman of the Mysore Race Club Y B Ganesh, the Stewards found many incriminating messages and Stewards decided to order an enquiry. Following this, the trainers refused to saddle their horses.

Ganesh said: ``Following the failure of the two favourites, Infiniteposibility and Dad`s Desire, the Stewards called the trainer and asked him if he would hand over his phone for the Stewards to check the calls made by the trainer during the races. The trainer willingly gave the phone. When we examined the phone, there were many messages and other incriminating evidence. The Stewards decided to go deep into the matter. Following this, the trainers struck work. We have opened two enquiries: One pertaining to the running of Johnson`s horses, the incriminating evidence that the trainer`s phone revealed and also the act of indiscipline by the trainers not saddling the horses after having accepted to run them.``

Johnson trained Infiniteposibility who had been disqualified after winning the race on the last occasion because of causing a series of interferences en route to winning the race was backed to the exclusion of the rest. Infiniteposibility went to the post for the 1100 metres Triveni Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, at a short price. Jockey John allowed Infiniteposibility to run freely in front. The favourite, after leading by lengths well into the final furlong, slackened and long shot Perfectimagination produced a strong run to overhaul the front-runner and won by three lengths. Quando Quando was third.

Daddy`s Girl was a strong favourite to win the 1200 metres Lalithamahal Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Daddy`s Girl was a maiden from six starts. Daddy`s Girl raced a handy third into the straight before getting a run along the rails to join the issue. Lightning Charlie who was well poised in the second position put up a strong challenge. Despite going wide under pressure, Lightning Charlie was handled well by apprentice Vivek G who managed to drive out the horse to stave off the challenge of the favourite. War Trail was third. The loss of these two favourites had the punters expressing their dissent.

The feature event, the 1200 metres Sardar K B Ramachandraraj Urs Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, had five runners. Rajesh Narredu trained Knight In Hooves who had skipped the whole Bangalore Summer Season, was the favourite ahead of Silver Flames who too hadn`t run for a long time besides not being a winner for 658 days. Aditya trained Gold Field, on the other hand, was a recent winner. The eight-year-old mare should have been logically the favourite but was allowed to run at nourishing odds. Apprentice jockey Saqlain rode a confident race on the lesser fancied runner, with a measured start-to-finish approach. The eight-year-old had enough legs to skip clear when Knight In Hooves essayed a challenge in the final furlong. Contributor ended up third.

Prasanna Kumar trained Tactical Command had no problem in obliging expectations in the 1200 metres Police Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 85. Anthony Raj kept Tactical Command in about the fourth position as Galen did the pace-setting. Tactical Command produced a powerful gallop down the final furlong to easily collar the front-running Galen to record an easy win. Lucky Chance ran on to finish third.

In what appeared an open type of betting, lesser fancied Smile Around won the 1200 metres Lalithamahal Plate (Div II), a race for horses in the lowest category, with a start-to-finish dash. Vaibhav had the speedy Smile Around lead from the front. The Sharat Kumar trainee skipped clear in the final furlong to win easily from Ultimate Choice, who with a late dash, edged out Rumour Lady from the runner-up berth.
