Tudor Hall bags Gold Cup

By: Goldie Boy   December 13 , 2021

Trainer Vijay Singh missed out Sunday`s plum but fired back strongly on Monday. The champion trainer saddled a quadruple of wins, including the prestigious race event in the country, the 1,600m Calcutta Gold Cup, aptly re-christened recently as the D. Khaitan Memorial Calcutta Gold Cup. The new name does pay a rich tribute to the man, Deepak Khaitan who loved the sport more than anything. The race field was nine-horse strong and was won by Tudor Hall (A. Sandesh-up) by a fair measure from his stable-mate, Shivansh (Suraj Narredu). On a disappointing note, Vijay also witnessed the failure of his champion galloper Black Pearl (Suraj) who, apparently, was at a big disadvantage by way of his eleven-months of lay off. Therefore, his meek surrender to trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s inspired performer, Shamshir Sword (app H.M. Akshay), hardly surprised most. Jaiswal also finished the day with a profitable double.

Tudor Hall was seen running off the pace as the topweighted Consigliory was at the helm with Psychic Force in his tow but the long time leader apparently broke down before turning for home and the Force spearheaded the field; until 300m from the target. It was left to Vijay`s Shivansh to make his move on the wide of out but the six-year-old never looked comfortable as a leader – shifting in and out – and the inevitable happened in the final 100m when Tudor Hall changed the gear.

Suraj was associated with Black Pearl`s all wins, six to be precise. The horse was ridden in almost an identical fashion the champion had partnered in the past but Black Pearl`s express respond in the final furlong was somewhat that was missing from the horse on this occasion. As a result of this, Vikash`s 6/1 chance Shamshir Sword, who had build up a healthy lead from the start, accelerated further to make it difficult for Black Pearl who tasted his first ever defeat, which was rather quite humiliating , if judged in terms of lengths – in excess of seven.

Nandini`s Pet, a 5/1 shot, had opened Vikash`s account in the opener, the 1,200m Cradle of The Deep Handicap that also witnessed a massive gamble on Neil Darashah`s Sir Phoenix (Chethan Gowda) going down the drain. Backed down to 7/10 the three-year-old never got a chance to come closer to Nandini`s Pet, a start-to-finish winner.

Vijay opened his account from the second race onwards when his strongly fancied runner, Secret Pearl (Nikhil Naidu) delivered the goods in the 1,100m Theogundi Handicap. However, it wasn`t an easy win for the lowly weighted three-year-old, sporting MAM Trust`s colours. The youngster waited in the mid-division as Bharath Singh`s Essos (app. Sujit Paswan) made the running in the company of Shivalik Silk (Vinay Jaiswal). Once into the home straight, Secret Pearl was brought on the wide out to accelerate and to catch-up with Aashay Doctor`s Rare Bird (app. P. Tajeshwar) who was also brought from the mid-field, the shortest way home only to be stumped, almost at the post.

Suraj`s power-packed riding of Vijay`s Resolute, a 14/10 favourite, weighed too heavy for Rutherford Alford`s front running Sheer Force (Arman Khan) in the 1,100m Sholay Handicap. The former was also taken measure of by the favourite inside the final 100m of the race.

The winning pair of Vijay and Naidu also returned victorious for the last Hurrah. In the concluding event, the 1,600m Birthday Girl Handicap, another strongly fancied runner of the winning pair, Ielani, though fought a close contest with the topweighted D. Knight Mysore (R.S. Bhati) but returned triumphant by half-a-length to make it a four-win day for the champion trainer.

In between all this cut throat business, trainer Daniel David pocketed a race, the 1,400m Royal Double Handicap. It was Danny`s recently gained migrant, Sherwin (H.M. Akshay) who, gathered a good public support but made a heavy weather of the opportunity. Coming slowly out of the gates, the four-year-old zigzagged his way up to take an easy measure of Bharath`s Suestado (app. Paswan), who was being cheered as a winner inside the last furlong.
