Sunrise Ruby pulls off an impressive win

  February 5 , 2022

Trevor Patel`s brilliant riding enabled Sunrise Ruby to pull off an impressive win in the 1400 metres Smasher Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, which featured an average card of eight events that were gone through on Saturday on the eve of the mega event of the season, the Indian Derby. Trevor timed his challenge on the lesser fancied runner to perfection.

Northern Lights and Pride`s Angel were the preferred ones, with Sunrise Ruby who had been pretty consistent throughout her career whenever campaigned over her pet distance of seven furlongs, was also in the betting but was not forcefully supported. Majestic Warrior brought the field into the straight and then weakened. Northern Lights shot through along the rails and shook off Pride`s Angel and headed towards a possible win. However, Northern Lights` hopes were dashed when Sunrise Ruby began to make a big headway from behind. In the persevering hands of jockey Trevor Patel, Sunrise Ruby overhauled the front-runner with something to spare. Pride`s Angel who had been on the boil having won a few races, weakened to finish third.

Asad Siddiqui trained Lagertha had run an eye-catching second behind Nothing To Worry and on the basis of that effort, had a strong chance to win the 1200 metres Hunt For Gold Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Apprentice jockey A S Peter did a decent job of the task on hand by bringing Lagertha into contention with a well-timed run. This enabled the fancied runner to get the better of Blazing Bay in the closing strides of the race. Dreams was third. Imtiaz Sait trained Remus looked good in the upper division of the race and accordingly, was accorded the status of being the favourite. Despite running into a spot of bother at the top of the straight, Remus found a clear passage inside the final furlong and burst through to record an easy win in the hands of jockey Anthony Raj. Fassbinder was second ahead of Northern Singer.

A surfeit of races for horses in the lowest classes were gone through. Antia trained Waverunner had showed out in the last outing and was the strong favourite to win the 1000 metres Tutankhamun Plate (Div I). Waverunner had to fight a stiff battle for supremacy with the front-running Magic In The Wind before asserting his supremacy in the shadow of the post. Intense Belief was third. Pesi Shroff trained Hunting Goddess appeared to have been from a different planet to be running in the lowest category race. Apprentice jockey Kritish Bhagat brought Hunting Goddess into contention from way off the pace. The favourite pounced on the front-running Rhythm of Nature to win the race as she pleased. Hunting Goddess doesn`t belong to the lower class. Hilma Klint was third.

Pesi Shroff trained Lord Byron let down huge expectations in the 1600 metres Eternal Flame Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. The horse hung in and failed to produce the winning run in the final furlong. Long shot Midas Touch from the stables of trainer Karthik Ganapathy held off Fairmont to land the spoils with Lord Byron being a tame third.

Another Pesi Shroff trained Mandeville obliged expectations in the 2400 metres Myrtlewood Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 quite easily. Mandeville had to face little bit of resistance from Royal Alamdaar before asserting his supremacy. Key To the Mint who was bidding for an encore ran too freely in front and tired out in the final furlong.

Imtiaz Sait trained Flaming Lamborgini asserted his supremacy in the 1600 metres Beautiful Strange Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Flaming Lamborgini moved with raking strides from the rear to assume command by the final furlong. Favourite Spinoza flattered to deceive while finishing second best. Multistarrer was third.
