Juliette spectacularly redeems her reputation

  February 6 , 2022

Karthik Ganapathy trained Juliette spectacularly redeemed her reputation which had been compromised by a dubious ride, swamping the opposition in the 2000 metres Gr 2 Zavaray S Poonawalla Eclipse Stakes of India, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the other highlight of the Derby Day. Jockey C S Jodha who replaced the controversial Sandesh in the saddle, made no mistake, alert to the task and getting his act right. The small made lion hearted filly did the rest unleashing an amazing burst of speed which had an accomplished field standing in its wake.

Though Juliette was running over a trip of 2000 metres trip which was reckoned to be sharp for her style of running besides conceding weight did not deter punters from making her a strong favourite. They were convinced that jockey Sandesh had not let the horse to run on merits on the last occasion though the Stewards had taken a lenient way and considered it as an ill-judged race handing the jockey a mild punishment. The manner in which Juliette won did no credit to the finding of the Stewards. Why Sandesh gave the kind of ride to Juliette could be the subject matter of a mystery thriller and not for ordinary mortals to comprehend.

Coming back to the race, Jodha settled Juliette in the rear position as Successor once again did the donkey`s job of setting the pace. Forest Flame raced in the second position ahead of Alluring Silver followed by Caprisca, Truly Epic and Juliette. Approaching the final bend, Jodha made his move on Juliette who covered the ground with a breath-taking run and had the field covered by the final furlong as she sped away from Forest Flame to record a smashing win. Alluring Silver was a faraway third. Juliette was cheered by the racegoers all the way back to the unsaddling enclosure. Alluring Silver reportedly burst her blood vessels.

Malesh Narredu trained Giant Star managed to beat favourite Cosmic Ray in the waning yards of the race to win the 1600 metres Gr 3 Rusi Patel Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over. Cosmic Ray, in the hands of Suraj Narredu, cruised into the lead inside the final furlong and shaped to win but was beaten close home by Giant Star who had a big pull in weights as the former was conceding 6.5 kgs to the latter. Neeraj Rawal rode the winner. Cosmic Ray had won the Gr 1 Super Mile last month on the same track.

Full brother to last year`s Indian Derby winner Supernatural duly won the 1400 metres Breeders` Produce Stakes, a terms for three-year-olds, quite easily but not in the manner of his spectacular debut win. Supernatural was driven out to win by over three lengths with Bangalore challenger Last Wish finishing second best ahead of Shabelle. The last-named did not show any improvement especially in the light of the fact that the two horses that she had beaten at Bangalore had gone on to record impressive wins.

The benefit of a race run stood the Pesi Shroff trained Emperor Roderic in good stead as the fancied runner had no problem in keeping the challenge of Dexa at bay in the 1200 metres B K Rattonsey Memorial Maiden Multi-Million, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Debutant Snowfall had big supporters but the favourite, after leading deep into the straight, could not sustain the effort and weakened to finish third.

Altaf Hussain trained Kings Best held on resolutely to beat the late flourish of Fortunate Son to win the 1600 metres Sir Homi Mehta Million, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Kings Best was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey T S Jodha and the full brother to this year`s Invitation Cup winner Alluring Silver battled on to prevail narrowly in the end. Hooves of Thunder who was also in contention weakened in the final stages of the race and ended third.

Neeraj Rawal drove out Skyfall to an easy win over favourite Columbian who once again let down expectations in the 1000 metres Play RWITC.COM Million, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Skyfall had an uncontested lead and was a winner every yard of the trip as Columbian failed to take a favourable position early on and left himself to cover too much ground in the stretch. His late rally could only fetch him the second position ahead of Spring Grove.

Malesh Narredu trained The Awakening won the 1400 metres Gateway of India Million, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, in a three-horse absorbing finish in the hands of jockey Yash Narredu. The Awakening who led from the start enjoyed a good cushion that held him in good stead when there was a strong charge by favourite Super Laggera and Kinnara. The front-runner prevailed by a neck with another neck separating the runner up from the third-placed horse.
