Northern Lights gets a gift race

  March 10 , 2022

Pesi Shroff trained Northern Lights did not encounter any opposition en route to his success in the 2000 metres J P Vazifdar Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of a lacklustre card of seven events held on Thursday. The impressive performer of the day was Narendra Lagad trained Son Of A Gun who hammered the opposition with his explosive gate speed in a race meant for three-year-olds despite conceding weight to his adversaries.

There were just three runners in the fray for the feature event. For once Karthik Ganapathy trained Magistero who used to run always with Caprisca and Truly Epic, was asked to face new opponents in the form of in form Northern Lights and Bold Legend. For the record, Bold Legend hadn`t won for 452 days while Magistero for a whopping 1595 days. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan could wait with Northern Lights as long as he wanted before asking for an effort. Northern Lights easily bounced clear to win by a widening margin of four lengths over Magistero and Bold Legend.

Narendra Lagad trained Son Of A Gun had recorded an impressive win last time out despite losing ground at the start. As he was conceding weight to his opponents, first-timer Distinction came in for big support to go to the post as a strong favourite ahead of Son Of A Gun. The progeny of Top Class showed explosive speed from the gates which settled the issue as the others were left stranded behind and were unable to keep pace. Son Of A Gun checked in by a widening margin of nine lengths over Mozelle. Distinction ran green and was a poor third.

Shazaan Shah trained Superleggera had lost a possible winning chance last time out as he did not get a clear run and was a good thing beat. Backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 metres Red Buttons Plate, a race for horses rated 20 46, Superleggera did not find anyone in the fray capable of stretching him. Zervan rode a confident race, bringing him into the spotlight with a smooth run down the final furlong. Superleggera picked up speed instantly and went sailing clear to win by a comfortable margin of over four lengths. Jetfire necked out Cipher to snatch the second position.

Noshir Cama trained Fairmont had narrowly failed to win on the last occasion but the five-year-old mare made amends in the 1800 metres S A Wahid Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Despite letting down as a fancied runner in all his three outings, Lord Byron had more supporters than the form horse Fairmont. Jockey Zervan brought Fairmont with a well-timed run from way off the pace and the progeny of Quasar covered the ground with menacing strides and had the race in her control in the final 100 metres. Mascara and Verdandi added some spice to the proceedings finishing with notable efforts. Mascara nosed out Verdandi to get the runner-up berth.

Moonshot from the stables of trainer M K Jadhav had two listless runs to his credit and hadn`t run for 144 days, the treatment sheet indicating laryngeal abnormality and an issue with the joint. As such, he was not in the betting, with Pesi Shroff trained Cherished cornering maximum support along with Brilliant Light to win the 1200 metres Sion F Nessim Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Cherished led the field into the final furlong but had no answer when Moonshot swooped on the front runner with a big effort. Moonshot headed the front-runner easily and won with a measure of comfort. Cherished managed to stave off Brilliant Light for the runner-up berth. The lower division of the race too went the way of another long-shot, Eyes on the Prize from the stables of Karthik Ganapathy who proved too good for the field winning as she pleased by a margin of five-plus lengths. Between Friends was second ahead of the late rallying Seminole.

Pesi Shroff trained Presidential had placed in the classics, his last run at Chennai being over a mile and half. He had run second to Evaldo in the South India Derby. Now racing over a seven-furlong trip, Presidential was the short-priced favourite despite coming back in trip. The opposition he was taking on was modest. Chouhan brought Presidential with a late charge and the favourite had enough legs to measure Multistarrer in the final furlong. Flaming Fire was third.
