Joaquin has it easy against tired opposition

  April 10 , 2022

Shazaan Shah trained Joaquin had it easy against a modest lot of tired horses in the 1400 metres Serjeant At Arms Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of the penultimate day`s racing of the Mumbai Racing Season held on Sunday. With the season winding to a close next Sunday, the quality of action has also diluted a great deal, with a run of the mill events featuring the day`s card. Punters, though, are finding it hard to be precise in their judgmental skills as revealed by the odds on the winners.

Joaquin was the only horse in the four-horse field with recent wins to his credit. Gazino who was once a rousing performer hadn`t won a race for three years while the other two had recorded wins at long intervals and were not known for their consistency. Jockey Trevor Patel could afford to relax Joaquin in the rear, though the slow pace of the race was not to the liking of his horse who raced keen in the early part before settling down. St Andrews who raced alongside of Gazino in the front weakened in the stretch to eventually finish last. Gazino held the lead as long as Trevor waited with Joaquin. The moment Trevor got busy; Joaquin cruised past Gazino to win as he pleased. Golden Quest was third.

Karthik Ganapathy trained Aira had been running fair races and had one win to her credit from nine outings. She definitely had a good chance in the A Hoyt Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 but the punter`s attention was focussed on Imtiaz Sait trained Aah Bella who had run a noteworthy race last time out. In the event, the race turned out to be an easy affair for Aira who in the hands of apprenticed jockey Vishal Bunde, made all the running and skipped away from favourite Aah Bella in the final furlong to record an easy win. Chieftain was third ahead of Mystical Rose while Mandeville had been scratched from the fray.

Malesh Narredu trained Hooves of Thunder did not win the 1600 meres Diego Rivera Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds in the manner the odds quoted on him suggested. The experienced campaigner chased Mont Blanc well into the straight before assuming command in the final furlong. However, the favourite could not breathe easy as he was hard-pressed to keep the lead in the closing stages of the race as Fashion Icon essayed a powerful challenge only to run out of real estate in the end. Mont Blanc weakened to finish a distance behind in the third position.

Pesi Shroff trained Faith recorded an encore in the 1200 metres Captain G Hall Trophy, a race for three-year-olds. Inishmore who had recorded a runaway win last time out was the strong favourite to repeat but he ran disappointingly, succeeding to just about get the second position from long time leader Divine Thoughts in the closing stride of the race. Even as Inishmore was engaged in a battle for supremacy with Divine Thoughts in the final furlong, Faith moved with raking strides and got stronger close to home. Inishmore could be better off tackling longer distances than the one he essayed.

Jetfire who has often found one better in his career, had been running consistent races and his turn came in the 1200 metres Flying Brave Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jetfire, in the hands of jockey N S Parmar, came home with a ground-saving run and burst clear in the final furlong to win the race easily from last start winner and favourite Flash Force. Fleur De Lys necked out long time leader Blazing Bay to save place money.

Dali Swirl from the stables of trainer Faisal Abbas duly obliged expectations on the basis of the noteworthy effort of last time by winning the 1400 metres V N Menon Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Apprentice jockey Prakash allowed Dali Swirl have his say with a start to finish effort and the favourite did not come under any pressure to win with a measure of comfort. Charlie came up with a late rally to get past Hyperdimensional to snatch the runner-up berth. Brilliant Light who was with a chance, failed to quicken when the race came to the boil and finished a tame fourth. Subhag Singh trained Marlboro Man duly obliged the faith in his abilities with a start to finish dash in the hands of jockey T S Jodha staving off the stiff challenge of Amped and Alpha Gene to claim the lower division of the race.

Imtiaz Sait trained Sinner prevailed in the 1600 metres Municipal Commissioner`s Trophy, a race for horses rated 2-0 to 46. Jockey Trevor Patel took Sinner to the front from the word go and though the fancied runner drifted to the centre of the track under pressure, he managed to win from the later rallying favourite Irrepressible. Speculator was a close third.
