Artemis Ignacia pulls off a gutsy win in Million

By: Tippu Sultan   August 7 , 2022

Neil Darashah trained Artemis Ignacia who had narrowly failed in the sprinters juvenile million recently at Bangalore found the extended trip of seven furlongs to her liking as she fought resolutely with Ashoka in the final furlong before asserting supremacy in the persevering hands of veteran jockey Pradeep Chouhan to clinch the 1400 metres K Mahipathi Rao Memorial Golconda Juvenile Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races.

There were intermittent rains but the rain-soaked track held good to make way for competitive racing.

Satish Narredu trained Crown Consort who has failed to live up to expectations after a smashing debut and an eye-catching effort in the Fillies Championship Stakes at Bangalore was widely believed to be capable of making amends and hence went to the post as a strong favourite. There were many in the field who had good credentials to recommend their claims and one of whom was Artemis Ignacia. Last start impressive winner The Image had also her share of supporters while Ashoka was allowed to run at long odds despite impressive performances on the home track.

Pradeep Chouhan took Artemis Gravis on a start-to-finish mission and the front-runner was not hassled to keep the lead with Ashoka and Crown Consort settled in close proximity while the rest were spaced out behind. The battle took a dramatic turn when Ashoka rallied strongly along the rails and even went ahead of Artemis Ignacia while Crown Consort did not make the expected progress, unable to find extra gear. However, Artemis Ignacia and Chouhan were not to be denied as a strong renewed effort from both saw Artemis Ignacia snatch the lead back. Artemis Ignacia eventually won by a shade less than a length while Crown Consort ended up a disappointing third.

Suraj Narredu was in his elements as he extracted the second favourite By The Bay from the stables of trainer Laxman Singh, from a difficult position and had the fancied runner produce a powerful run down the final furlong to land the spoils in the 1200 metes hyderabadraces.com Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Rising Queen led in front aggressively deep into the straight but slackened in sight of the post. By The Bay put her head in front in the shadow of the post and held off the late burst of Able Love and Drd. Rising Queen was a close fourth.

Ravinder Singh trained last start winner Beauty Blaze was backed to the exclusion of the rest and displaced Arabian Queen as the firm favourite in the 1200 metres Jangaon Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. In the hands of jockey Nikhil, Beauty Blaze bolted to the front and kept on expanding the lead in the stretch to check in by a widening margin of eight lengths for a smashing win. Briar Ridge was second ahead of Arabian Queen who was a beaten cause from the word `go`.

Anant Vatsalya trained Wallop And Gallop brought off an upset in the 1800 metres Basara Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Grand Duke was the firm favourite while Wallop And Gallop was quietly fancied. The start though was ominous for Wallop And Gallop as he was sluggish from the gates but jockey P Ajeeth Kumar worked his way on the wide outside to take a handy position by the final turn. On turning for home, Wallop And Gallop produced a strong run to go strong storming clear and winning with a measure of comfort over Advance Guard and Yesterday who failed to get an interference passage in the stretch. Grand Duke made no show.

Apprentice jockey R S Jodha held his nerve even as A A Vikrant lost his whip at a crucial stage of the race resulting in the second favourite managing to prevail in the 1100 metres Nizam Sagar Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Ambitious Star led from the start with Costello in close proximity. Inside the final furlong, it looked as though Costello would collar the front-runner and win easily but the front-runner fought back and held on to the lead to record a narrow win with Vikrant unable to get that bit extra in the absence of his whip.

Akshay Kumar drove out the well fancied Malibu to an easy win over favourite Clefairy in the 1200 metres Ascot Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Malibu got a clear run along the inside and shot ahead inside the final two furlongs and won untroubled. Clefairy who caught herself very wide was left to cover a considerable leeway but could only close the gap. Hugh Capet was third.

Pedro Planet, in the hands of jockey Mukesh Kumar, produced a big effort down the final furlong to easily collar Cash Register to win the last race of the day, the 1400 metres Brown Jack Plate (Div II), a race for horses in the lowest category at nourishing odds. There was strong support for Netto-trained Akash but the favourite was not spotted to have any chance during the race.
