Corfe Castle bounces back with an impressive win

By: Tippu Sultan   August 28 , 2022

Leo D`Silva trained seven-year-old Corfe Castle had no problem in disposing of the challengers en route to an easy win in the 1400 metres Governor`s Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of the races held at Malakpet on Sunday. Corfe Castle who was winning a race after more than 200 days, thus recorded his 11th win from 30 outings. Jockey Akshay Kumar was astride the winner.

Corfe Castle towered over the opposition but on occasions, he had let down expectations which perhaps may be the reason why he was quoted at over even money to beat a jaded lot of horses. Akshay Kumar kept Corfe Castle in the rear as the horse lacks the speed and picks up momentum once he gets into the rhythm. Akshay was alert to the task and did not want to concede too much lead to those in front and he made his move well before approaching the final furlong. Corfe Castle covered the leeway in a trice and had no problem in storming clear of Xfinity who held on resolutely till the final furlong. After being overhauled, Xfinity battled on to stave off Premier Action to keep the runner-up berth. New Look who was widely expected to put some semblance of a fight, ran way below expectations to finish a poor fourth.

The day`s proceedings started on a good note for the punters with the heavily backed Able Love from the stables of trainer Ravinder Singh obliging expectations in the 1200 metres Northern Dancer Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The betting on Able Love was justified as the filly had gone down narrowly in her lasting outing. Beauty On Parade led from the start and had the lead going into the final 100 metres when the aggressively-ridden favourite came home with a powerful effort. With Akshay Kumar unrelenting, Able Love was able to overhaul the front-runner and then stave off the late surge of Miss Little Angel and Drd. The lead that Able Love had in the closing stages of the race held her in good stead as both Miss Little Angel and Drd covered plenty of leeway to finish in close order.

The trend in the betting ring suggested a three-way battle between OK Boss, Exotic Dancer and NRI Millennium in the 1100 metres Hyperion Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Last start winner Exotic Dancer from the stables of trainer Donald Netto was taken on a start-to-finish mission by jockey Suraj Narredu. The fancied runner stayed put there and skipped clear in the final furlong to win the race by a margin of over two lengths. OK Boss failed to bridge the leeway conceded and had to settle for the second position. Golden Forza who went in the chase of the eventual winner from the start, weakened to finish third while the other fancied runner NRI Millennium was fourth.

The 1100 metres Colonel B Santosh Babu Memorial Cup, a race for maiden three-year-olds was contested by a poor lot of maidens. There was no indication as to who could be the possible winner as all of them had performed poorly in their previous efforts. Laxman Singh trained Bellaque who had finished about 18 lengths behind the winner ended up being the default favourite with some support coming for Survivor and Alpine Girl. The race was won by long shot Divine Connection. Survivor lacked the speed from the gates and soon after the jump out, was shuffled back to the last position. Bellaque led from the start and had the lead going into the final furlong. However, the favourite could not hold on to the lead as Satheesh trained Divine Connection, despite going miles wide, managed to get the better of the front-runner with a fair degree of ease. Apprentice jockey R S Jodha was astride the winner. NRI Angel ran late to pip Alpine Girl to snatch the third position.

Jockey Anthony Raj guided Shashikanth trained NRI Sport to a comfortable win over Royal Grace in the 1400 metres Artillery Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Akshay Kumar who wins races by the dozen has the luxury of coming from anywhere and winning on the local circuit but at times, these tactics come a cropper. It was so with Royal Grace who initially was at the wrong end of the field, conceded too much ground which let down the hopes of the favourite despite covering enormous ground in the stretch. NRI Sport who chased Bangor On Dee into the straight, quickly took over the running and spurted ahead and opened up a sizeable lead which turned out to be a winning one. The finishing burst of Royal Grace went in vain. By The Way ran on late to edge out Bangor On Dee to save place money.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Mysterious Angel recorded an encore swamping the opposition in the 1400 metres Aslfabad Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Backed strongly to oblige, Mysterious Angel chased second favourite Archangel into the straight and burst clear in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of three lengths over Pedro Planet and the late-finishing Explosive. Archangel who looked to be travelling handily into the straight failed to quicken under pressure and faded out of contention without a fight.
