Jake prevails by a neck in Krishnaraja Wadiyar Trophy

  September 2 , 2022

Vijay Singh trained Jake rallied strongly from way off the pace to neck out Chashni to win the Gr 3 H H Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy 2022, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Friday`s Mysore races. Jake, running after an impressive third behind Trafalgar at Bangalore, benefitted from the forward run and beat an ineffective opposition at long odds.

Priceless Gold had eked out a narrow win over Taimur in his last outing and was considered to have an outstanding chance as evidenced by the trend in the betting ring. All Attractive was the other horse in demand along with My Opinion while the Kolkata challenger Jake who had won six times from ten outings back home was at long odds, his impressive run at Bangalore notwithstanding.

Havelock Prince set a brisk pace followed by Chashini, All Attractive, Priceless Gold, Bellator and My Opinion. Chashini took over the running at the top of the straight and battled on resolutely even as All Attractive gave a chase but failed to collar the front-runner. Jockey Hindu Singh who was looking for a run along the rails, wisely switched him out and the progeny of Win Legend came up with a good burst of speed down the final furlong to pinch the verdict in the closing strides of the race. All Attractive was third while favourite Priceless Gold gave no hope at any stage of the race finishing disappointingly. My Opinion found the trip too sharp for his liking.
The day`s proceedings did not run kindly for punters, with upsets being par for the day. Officially, the going was declared as good but there was visible disconcerting kickback during the race and it is possible some of the fancied runners played truant, made ineffective by the underfoot conditions. Pratap Kamath tined Imperius won the lower division of the K T Shamaiah Gowda Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, in imperious fashion with aggressive running in front, the verdict being a widening margin of six lengths. Imperius had run 10 lengths behind the winner Braxton last time out but showed remarkable improvement, relishing the underfoot conditions, to floor those who believed Parker was invincible in this company. Jockey Janardhan Paswan had an arm-chair ride on the winner, with favourite Parker making no impression. D Durga was third. Ramesh S trained Niche Cannabis was well fancied to win the upper division of the race. The five-year-old, despite a strong challenge from favourite Perfectimagination, pulled out that bit extra to eventually win with a measure of comfort. Perfectimagination came for one-sided betting in the ring and though Sai Kiran had the favourite quickly improving in the straight, the five-year-old mare flattered to deceive after giving hopes in the final furlong. Swiss Tigress was third more than seven lengths adrift of the favourite.

Apachu trained Notoriety had lost a possible winning chance as a strongly backed horse last time out due to interference. Now backed strongly to redeem the losses, Notoriety lived up to her name, with a dismal performance. Gallery Queen who got a beautiful run along the rails as those in front went wide at the final bend, was driven out by jockey Y S Srinath for a facile win. What Is This held off D Brother to get the runner-up berth. Monnappa trains the winner.

Joseph Awale trained Brunhild was the betting rage in the 1200 metres M S Suresh Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 85. Brunhild survived a scare barely managing to pull off a narrow win over Wild Spell. Apprentice jockey Darshan Anthony took Wild Spell on a start-to-finish mission and put up a dogged fight. It took an all-out effort by jockey Prashant Dhebe to get the favourite to put his neck in front at the all-important end. Sadeek was third.

Srinivas Babu trained Marvel Princess was another favourite to oblige in the 1100 metres Lt Col D K Mistry Memorial Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Apprentice jockey Hasib Alam had Marvel Princess call the shots in front and the seven-year-old mare stayed put in front, winning by over two lengths. D Fire gave a chase in vain. The heavily whipped Vijaya Sarathi managed to save place money in the hands of jockey Sai Kiran.

The day`s proceedings started on an ominous note with Ranjeet Shinde trained Miraculous Girl being the strong favourite to win the 1100metres Shiakashi Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category and flopping miserably. Lesser fancied Star Speck led from the start and held off the strong bid by D Fighter by a shade less than a length in the hands of apprentice jockey Angad for trainer Pratap Kamath. Miraculous Girl was a disappointing third.
