Salento edges out Ashoka in Race 2 Win Colts Classic

By: Tippu Sultan   September 4 , 2022

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Salento produced a stunning gallop in the final furlong from way off the pace to collar Ashoka in the dying moments of the race to win the Gr 3 Race2Win.com Deccan Colts Championship Stakes, the second classic of the season at Malakpet on Sunday. It was a hat-trick of success for trainer Arjun Mangalorkar in this event while for jockey Anthony Raj, the win came on the back of the success on Kensington in the last year`s edition of this race. Salento is by Usha Stud Farm resident stallion Speakingofwhich which has been going great guns.

There was less clarity about the contestants as none had outstanding credentials. On paper, Ahead of My Time was much better than the rest though he was suspect over a trip of a mile as even his illustrious full sister Ruffina was found wanting over a mile-long trip. Ashoka had pulled off a narrow win over Artemis Ignacia in his last outing and the latter`s close second in the Fillies Championship Stakes surely enhanced the value of his performance. Among the rest, Arjun Mangalorkar trained Salento had the credentials despite being a maiden as his last effort at Bangalore over a mile had seen him clock a timing that is par for a classic. Salento had run a few times and his running style suggested that he needed more ground to prove his mettle. This view was further enhanced by his performance when he was an impressive second behind Shamrock over a more suitable trip of a mile.

Jockey Sandesh compounded his problems on favourite Ahead of My Time by going at a good pace which was to be his undoing in the end. Ahead of My Time had the lead well into the final furlong but it was clear that he was running out of reserves when Ashoka swooped on him with a strong challenge. Ashoka then surged ahead and shaped to win but his hopes were dashed by Salento who came from way off the pace with a thundering run to get the nod in the shadow of the post. Salento won by half a length over Ashoka who in turn was three lengths ahead of Ahead of My Time.

Impavid, Kensington and Salento were the horses that Arjun Mangalorkar saddled to success in this event in the last three years.

The day`s first race saw The Akhanda, the short-priced favourite, expected to have it easy in the 1400 metres Hussain Sagar Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, bite the dust. Melting Ice set the pace followed by Quality Warrior. Jockey Ashhad Asbar chose to relax the favourite in about the fourth position. The Akhanda was travelling so well that it looked as though he would easily overhaul the front-runners the moment his jockey asked him to do so. Perhaps the jockey waited a wee bit longer or was too overconfident as he let Quality Warrior who surged ahead approaching the final furlong, build up a lead which turned out to be a difficult one to bridge. Quality Warrior held on to the grimly to win by a shade less than a length. Philanthropist who was taken wide in the straight then ducked towards the rails and made good progress to finish third.

Srinivas Reddy trained The Thunder made amends for the failure of on-my favourite The Akhanda by easily getting the measure of 1200 metres Mount Pleasant Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Ashhad Asbar took no chances this time as he took The Thunder on a start-to-finish mission. Wild Spirite looked like posing a challenge but The Thunder produced that bit extra to pull clear in the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort. Sergeant Reckless was third. Prasad Raju trained Strauss was strongly backed to win as he looked to be a cut above the rest in the fray in the lower division of the race. Suraj Narredu had no problem in getting Strauss to overhaul the long-time leader Rovaniemi in the final furlong for a facile win. Dyanoosh who was loitering in the second last position till turning for home produced a powerful effort to be an impressive second. Temptations was third.

Lesser fancied Red Snapper from the stables of trainer Leo D`Silva pulled it off in the 1200 metres Hyderabad City ice Commissioner`s Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Mark My Day was strongly backed to win on the basis of his close second behind Super Angel in his previous effort. Jockey Nakhat Singh had the favourite chasing Different well into the straight before surging ahead in the final furlong. However, Mark My Day could not carry the lead to the post as Red Snapper pounced on him with a strong effort and went ahead inside the final100 metres and held off the late rallying NRI Sun who came from the clouds to finish an eye-catching second ahead of the favourite. Suraj Narredu powerfully rode out Laxman Singh trained Full Volume for an easy win in the lower division of the race. Full Volume who had finished second best on two occasions was backed to make amends though close to race time, inspired betting NRI Touch saw the Sequeira trainee going to the post as the favourite. After Gusty Note led the field from the start and weakened approaching the final furlong, Suraj got busy on Full Volume who overwhelmed Amyra before storming clear to win by a margin of over two lengths. Amyra held off the late bid of Top Class who came from way off the pace but ran out of ground in the end. NRI Touch who graced the wrong end of the field did not make the expected progress in the stretch and ended up a tame fourth.

Newly licensed trainer N Rawal led in a winner through Bedford who swamped the opposition with aggressive running in front to claim the 1200 metres Mahabubnagar Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 by a widening margin of five lengths. Linewiler and NRI Blue finished behind to take the next two spots. Favourite Star Racer was not spotted to have any chance.
