Tigrio wins in a thrilling finish

By: Goldie Boy   September 14 , 2022

Expectations were high from trainer Neil Darashah` s mare, Sea of Cortez (app J.H. Arul) in the Skyexch.com Cup, the main attraction in Wednesday`s race card. However, a slow start by the six-year-old, left the competition somewhat open, though it was the 5/2 favourite, Tigrio, who finally triumphed,

in a three-cornered blanket finish, thanks to apprentice Hasib Alam`s timely efforts – bisecting a friendless Patrick Quinn`s Soaring High (app S. Saqlain) and the fancied Rutherford Alford-runner, Redoubtable (Vivek G.), inside the final 100m of the race.

The other contests in the afternoon six-event card were, however, one-sided, leaving an emerging young professional, Aashay Doctor, with popular double through Harvestime (Nikhil Naidu) and Livisilla, ridden by a visiting South India jockey, Ashhad Asbar. Neither of the two riders, however, needed great expertise in the saddle to partner their respective favourites to winners` enclosures but it was simply the trust bestowed by those who retained them for services that mattered.

Harvestime, 33paise hot property, took some time before he passed the longtime leader, Dr Doom (Hasib), from trainer Javed Khan`s stable, in the Skyexch.com Monsoon Plate but it was only nearing the final furlong that the top-weighted colt got in to motion to draw away from the speedster, indicating, the slated trip of 1,200m was a quite sharp to his liking.

Livisilla, on the other hand, was backed down from 2`s to evens, and the five-year-old pounced on the long time leader, Quinn`s Properly Posh (app. Vivek) below the distance-post for a facile victory. However, Properly Posh would do better with a waiting race instead of adopting the pillar-to-post tactics.

In the same race, trainer Christopher Alford`s Mandolin (Nikhil) was seen covering much ground to place a good second.

Despite the missed chance in the main event and the Properly Posh`s misjudged tactics, Quinn`s ‘An Apple A Day` routine fetched him 1,100m Tangiers Handicap that was picked up by his last outing convincing winner, Thiago (Saqlain). By his own admission that the four-year-old had gained his last victory when far from fully tuned, the repeat win, therefore, hardly came as a surprise. In the same race, trainer Darashah`s Regency Gold got an equal support in the betting at 5/2 but the Strong Suit filly was again at the receiving end after being drubbed by Properly Posh in her last outing.

Darashah`s day was made after Vanguard (A.Imran Khan) had an easy measure of trainer Harvinder Bath`s 5/2 favourite, Circle Of Love C.S. Jodha) in the 1,600m Gumaan Handicap. However, B. Mahesh`s lightweight Essos (Vivek) provided the required early pace, and there wasn`t much left to do for Vangaurd who shot into the lead to win comfortably from Circle Of Love. The later, of course, needed the run and must be kept in mind when she lines up again.

There is nothing much to write about trainer Daniels David`s Lightinthesky ‘s back-to-back in the day`s opener, the Hokaido Handicap. The fittest filly in the field of seven triumphed.
