Victoria Punch brings off a stunning upset

  September 16 , 2022

Irfan Ghatala-trained Victoria Punch brought off a stunning upset in the Gr 3 Mysore 1000 Guineas, a terms race for three-year-old fillies, the first classic of the season on Friday at Mysore. Victoria Punch who had failed to break the maiden`s status in her four outings ran above expectations to record a decisive win over Polished Girl in the hands of jockey Anthony Raj who of late has been hogging the limelight with a series of wins in the classics.

The victory of Victoria Punch also raised the profile of Kunigal Stud Farm resident stallion Sanus Per Aquam. Salento had won the Gr 3 Deccan Colts Championship also as a maiden. The two classic wins for a new stallion are a big boost to the stud farm no doubt. The pity though is that Kunigal Stud Farm is facing an uncertain future as the lease has come to an end and one is not sure whether the current promotors are keen to keep it going or whether any other new bidder will show up on the horizon. Everything also depends on what stand the government takes given the fact that any piece of land is coveted for the value that it carries and the Kunigal Stud Farm is spread over more than 400 acres.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Mirra who had two impressive wins to back her credentials was made the short-priced favourite. On the other hand, the winner of Gr 1 Fillies Championship Philosophy was at generous odds considering the relative achievements of the two horses under question. On the perusal of the track works, there was a feeling that Philosophy may have been a little underdone given the fact that continuous rains had hampered the preparation of horses at Bangalore. The market was firm in the belief that the outcome would be confined to these two horses. The victory of Victoria Punch was in the realm of a huge upset.

The fate of the race was decided in the first furlong itself when Suraj Narredu on Polished Girl tactically slowed down the pace so much so that those running behind, who were keen, had to be restrained. Sandesh on Philosophy did not read the race well and chose to strangle the horse to stay in the rear along with Mirra who lost pace midway through the race and came off the bridle well before the final turn. The pace of the race was so slow that Polished Girl, reckoned to be more suitable for shorter trips, held the lead deep into the straight but close home, Victoria Punch shot through to get the nod. Philosophy raised hopes moving with raking strides but flattened in the final furlong o finish a tame third. Mirra ran on from a hopeless position to fill up the frame. The winner clocked a slow time of one minute 38.08 seconds which was nearly five seconds off the timing recorded by Ravishing Blue in a handicap race. This gives a perspective on the way the Guineas race panned out and the attendant result that came about.

Ravishing Form swamped the opposition in the 1600 metres Original Vel Racing Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Trevor Patel raced the Parvati Byramji-trained Ravishing Form in the second position as Shubankar set the pace. Ravishing Form cruised into the lead in the stretch, and by the final furlong, had come a long way from the rest to eventually win by a distance in a new course record timing of one minute 33.54 seconds, bettering that of Cosmic Ray by fractions. Shubankar stayed on to take second place ahead of Silvarius.

Vijay Singh trained Success who ran as a final entry for the Bangalore Derby, made mincemeat of the opposition in the 1600 metres Gool & Soli Poonawalla Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 85. Success won as she liked in a fast timing of one minute 35.78 seconds over Notoriety and Divine Ray. If Success had been in the lineup for the Guineas, there could have been a different tale to talk about the Guineas.

Apprentice jockey Saqlain who is growing in status guided Elusive Girl to victory in the 1400 metres M W Chinnappa Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Elusive Girl fought out with The Response in the final furlong before getting stronger at the finish. Gintoki was third. Azhar Ali trains the winner.

Ranjeet Shinde trained Sir Calculus looked a cut above the rest in the 1200 metres Penambur Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Sir Calculus had no problem in disposing of the opposition with a blistering run in the final furlong in the hands of jockey Y S Srinath. Indian Glory was second ahead of Valkyrie. Feroz M Khan trained Country`s Delight led all the way and won the lower division of the race by a widening margin of eight lengths over Star Speck and Felicita in the lower division of the race.

Apprentice jockey Saqlain had a double for the day as apart from guiding Elusive Girl to victory, he was also successful on Bobby trained Jabbar who put daylight between himself and the rest in the 1200 metres Son of the Light Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Spiritualqueen necked out favourite Rumour Lady with a late rally to pinch the second position.
