Salento slams Deccan Derby field in brilliant fashion

By: Tippu Sultan   October 2 , 2022

Arjun Mangalorkar-trained Salento showed vast improvement when trouncing the opposition in the Gr 1 Coromandel Gromor Deccan Derby, the star event of the Hyderabad Monsoon Season on Sunday. The progeny of Usha Stud Farm resident stallion Speaking of Which, Salento had given an indication of his immense talent with a late burst which had fetched him the Colts Championship Stakes earlier in the season. The extended trip saw him blooming to his full potential.

Salento was not an early bloomer but the potential was evident as he showed improvement at Bangalore during the summer season in his last effort when he ran behind Shamrock over a mile. It was clear that he needed more ground to prove his mettle. In the Colts Championship Stakes, he managed to win from way off the pace and that run suggested that he would be more at home over a longer trip. Salento was justifiably the favourite ahead of Ashwa Magadheera who had reeled off four wins in a row.

Ashwa Yuduvir did the job of pace-setting followed by NRI Superpower, Shabelle, Salento, Artemis Ignacia, , Ashwa Magadheera and Princess Daka. Ashwa Yuduvir brought the field into view and it was clear even at the top of the straight that the best travelling horse was Salento who was cruising up. When jockey Anthony Raj shook the reins, the response was immediate. Salento stormed past those in front with hardly any effort and stretched away for a facile win by a widening margin of four lengths. Ashwa Magadheera rallied well in the final furlong but the winner had flown home. Shabelle held off Artemis Ignacia to take the third spot.

Leo D`Silva trained Premier Action made all the running and held off the challenge from Top Action to clinch the 1400 metres Turf Authorities of India Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Knight Templar who had run a game second 43 days ago despite running after 500 plus days was the favourite but the horse was withdrawn before coming under the starter`s orders. Knight Templar has a history of an issue with the tendon and as such, he has not been seen in action on a regular basis. It has been over 600 days since Knight Templar won a race but despite this, he was the favourite ahead of Scramjet to win the race. Jockey Afroz Khan took Premier Action to the front and the front-runner battled on resolutely to win the race after a gap of 566 days. Favourite Scramjet was hemmed in by Super Angel in the stretch and the favourite too was not inclined to raise a fluent gallop and eventually finished last of four runners, two of the horses having been non-starters after having accepted.

In a race contested by horses with a poor record, Sreekant trained Sea of Class broke his maiden`s ranks in his 19th outing by recording a comprehensive win in the 1400 metres Delhi Race Club Cup, a race for horses in the lowest category. Red River held sway from the beginning till going into the final furlong before Sea of Class produced a good effort in the hands of jockey B R Kumar to sail past the front-runner to win with a measure of comfort. Sea of Class had the form having finished a close fourth in his last outing. That`s My Way finished on from behind to edge past the long-time leader Red River to get the runner-up berth. The heavily supported Mauser possibly more due to the presence of jockey Akshay Kumar, who ran without hope and finished down the field.

Akshay Kumar who has been having a dry run must have heaved a sigh of relief when Hilton Sequeira trained Elusive who was at cramped odds obliged in the 1200 metres Bangalore Turf Club Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Elusive produced a good effort after being pulled wide early in the straight to get a clear run. Elusive had no problem in covering the leeway on those in front and then thwarting the challenge of Carlisle for an easy repeat win. Divine Connection who did the pace-setting stayed on to take the third position.

The drifting odds on the well-performed Ballerina who had made her last appearance in a million at Bangalore a winning one had its own tale to tell. It was clear that there was something amiss with the filly judging by the long absence from the track beside the far-from impressive mock race. Ashwa Morocco was the favourite to win the 1200 metres Madras Race Club Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Black Onyx who was bidding for a hat-trick had been withdrawn from the fray last time out and this could be the reason why the form horse was allowed to run at lucrative odds. Ballerina was the first horse to fade out from the reckoning in the final furlong even as Ashwa Morocco, from a handy second position, assumed command from the front-running By The Way in the final furlong. Black Onyx had considerable ground to cover on the front-runner but the lesser fancied runner flew home on the wide outside after getting a clear run to win with a measure of comfort in the hands of jockey Dhanu Singh Deora for trainer Magan Singh Parmar. By The Way kept the third position nosing out Lifes Song while Ballerina failed to find a spot on the frame.

Falcon Edge was another losing favourite that Akshay Kumar found himself on. Backed strongly to win the 1400 metres Royal Calcutta Turf Club Cup, a race for horses rated 60 to 85, Falcon Edge graced the wrong end of the field and did not make much progress in the straight and finished disappointingly. Ravindra Singh trained New Look hit the front from the word `go` and was unchallenged in the front as the lesser fancied runner skipped clear in the final furlong to win in the hands of jockey S Jodha to win by a margin of over three lengths. Second favourite Stunning Force was handily placed to challenge the front-runner but he was flat-footed, even losing the second position to the late rallying last start winner Staridar. Amyra was fourth. Falcon Edge reportedly came back lame.

Srinivas Reddy trained Arthur was considered too good for the field in the 1400 metres Royal Western Indian Turf Club Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, but the favourite just about failed to overhaul the long-priced NRI Sport by a whisker. Arthur`s mock race was impressive besides he had finished two lengths behind Gr 1 Colts Championship Stakes Winner Mojito at Bangalore. Jockey Akshay Kumar who used to get winners by the dozen is of late finding himself more on losers than winners. Arthur had the credentials but the jockey`s patented style of coming from way off the pace is always fraught with danger if the front-runner gets the uncontested lead and has something in the reserve in crunch situations. NRI Sport who chased Ayr into the straight, had the lead going into the final furlong and managed to stave off the late bid of Arthur who came home with a powerful run only to find the front-runner escape to victory. Apprentice jockey Santosh Raj was unperturbed by the serious challenge posed by the favourite and stuck to his task to get rich dividends. The inconsistent Akido showed some resolution when finishing third.

The concluding race of the day, the 1400 metres Mysore Race Club Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 looked like a minefield as it was difficult to spot the winner given the modest performances ditched out by the contenders in the fray in their career. Dream Station who had broken the maidens` ranks in his 20th effort, was the favourite, with Fly To the Stars who was a maiden from eight starts being next in demand. Fly To the Stars was loitering at the rear of the field but jockey Pradeep Chouhan wisely chose to make his bid along the rails. He got a clear run when the whole field swung out wide at the final furlong. Fly To The Stars covered the leeway briskly and stormed past Spectacular Cruise to record an easy win. Dream Station came up with a late bid but failed to get even the runner-up berth by a whisker. Pedro Planet was a close fourth.
