Success lands Derby on Vijay Singh`s day

By: Goldie Boy   January 8 , 2023

Trainer Vijay Singh`s even-money favourite, Success (Suraj Narredu-up), kept her date with the 2,400m Wolf777 Calcutta Derby Stakes, here, on Sunday. The half-a-length victory of the Havana Gold-Columela daughter, over trainer James McKeown`s long-shot, Trevalius (Trevor Patel), may have silenced her critics, suspecting the favourite`s capacity to take two long distance Classics in her stride, within 13 days but to be fair to the small-made brave heart, she did it with aplomb, even if the verdict recorded over Trevalius was far from convincing.

The Derby was run at a fairly paced race, with the likes of Arrow Points, Monteverdis and Sonatas testing their hooves up-front, until the final turn. Once in the home-stretch, it was Monteverdi who called the shots but he had no answer to the acceleration produced by Success and Trevalius.

Vijay ruled supreme, saddling five winners in the afternoon ‘s eight-event card. The champion trainer made a bright start, saddling winners of the opening three events.

The curtain-raiser, the Wolf777.com witnessed Vijay`s two fancied runners, the in-form Regency Smiles (Imran Chisty) and the Mumbai migrant Presidential (Suraj) on the same page but Regency Smile enjoyed the weight advantage and, deservingly got the measure of the Presidential who may have needed the run against the hugely in-form sprinter. Incidentally, Regency Smiles notched up her third win in-a-row.

The victory of another migrant for fillies` classic, Arabian Queen (Suraj), was a mere formality for any odds. However, for reasons best known to her western India connections, Arabian Queen went to the start as a 17/20 odds-on favourite. Allowing Patrick Quinn`s Dubai Dunes (Md Islam) to show the way; until the home-turn, the favourite took over and was sighted a winner, long way from home.

Vijay`s third winner, Odin, was also ridden by Suraj but faced another of stable`s challenger, Prosperous Prince (Hindu Singh) in the 2,000m Wolf777 Cup. As expected, the later ran an inspired race but, being short of experience over a mid-distance trip, the Net Whizz colt may have hugely benefitted by this outing and he lives to fight another day.

Vijay`s fifth winner, too, was a virtual formality. However, the ‘ring` odds offered on Yazh (Hindu Singh) -- a 7/2 fancy --, may not suggest so. Leave alone, the Win Legend son being ‘Gate-Shy,` and a difficult customer to load in, tones of money also followed in directions of trainer Rutherford Alford`s recent addition to the yard, D. Gold Digger (Chisty), who pushed Yazh`s odds up alarmingly. It was a big relief when handlers managed to push the high-stung filly inside the stall. For those following the career-graph of the filly, knew the outcome of the race as well – she won by the length of the straight.

The smart victory of trainer Aashay Doctor`s quadruple seeking horse, Cape Tanaros (Trevor), did not go unnoticed, against Vijay`s haul of five. Backed down to exclusion of eight in the line-up, from 3`s to evens , suffice is to say that the five-year-old made every post a winning one in the 1,100m Hyderabad Race Club Cup. She returned to the winner`s enclosure, with a promise of another victory in her store.

In-between the Vijay`s saga, trainer Vinay Jaiswal pinched a clever win on Mount Reno (Chisty), a 6/1 chance in the 1,100m Wolf777 Dash. Trainer B, Mahesh, too, managed to land a much needed gamble, on Blue Origin, thanks to the power-packed riding of Trevor who just about lasted out to score, having led from the start. Quinn`s Jean Lafette (S. Saqlain), who placed a good second in the race, failed to provide a consolation win to his mentor, on the day. Quinn`s ante-post Derby favourite, Imperial Power, cried out from the Derby field, having burst blood vessel, during last Monday`s workouts.
