Dallas Todywalla trained Golden Guest broke the winless sequence by registering a narrow hard-fought win over Gazino in the 1200 metres Royal Calcutta Turf Club, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Thursday’s Mumbai races. Golden Guest hadn’t won for 760 days but despite running in a higher category, managed to break the jinx thanks to a modest opposition that he was encountering.

On the last two occasions, Golden Guest had lost in tight finishes by a whisker in the lower category. Now running in the higher category, Golden Guest was confidently backed to oblige. Jockey Sandesh kept Golden Guest in a handy third position as stablemate Hidden Gold set a brisk pace. Sandesh drove Golden Guest to take charge inside the final 300 metres and the progeny of Excellent Art spurted ahead and managed to keep Gazino who finished with a rush in the final furlong at bay. Augustus Caesar who was a tailed off last till turning for home, made rapid strides in the straight to finish an eye-catching third. August Caesar could be seen in a better light next time out now that he has shown some spark in his effort.

Imtiaz Sait trained Pride’s Angel maintained her winning form by completing a hat-trick in the 1400 metres Godspeed Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Majestic Warrior set a good pace which helped Sandesh to settle Pride’s Angel in a comfortable second position. Northern Lights who was widely expected to have a bold show was in the rear group. Sandesh reacted quickly on entering the straight and had the lesser fancied runner take charge inside the final two furlongs. Pride’s Angel kicked clear and had enough cushion when Northern Lights came home with a big effort. Pride’s Angel held on to win by a diminishing margin of half a length. The Awakening necked out the long-time leader Majestic Opinion to save place money.

Antia led in a winner when the consistent Dilbar put in a speedy effort in front and enjoyed a good lead all the way to the winning post in the 1000 metres Quest For Cash Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The well-bred Kinnara who carried the weight of public expectations was rather late to the task and could not bridge the lead and had to settle for the second spot. Kinnara’s performance was rather disappointing considering the runaway win recorded by the well-bred got-abroad filly on the last occasion. Incidentally, this was the third win for Dilbar in 17 outings. A stablemate of Dilbar, Slam Dunk headed Magic In The Wind at the post to get the third position.

After a listless performance in a graded race, Malesh Narredu trained Flaming Fire found his bearings in the 1400 metres Running Star Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Midas Touch had the first run on her opponents and led deep into the straight before being overwhelmed by the favourite who eventually won with a measure of comfort in the hands of jockey Yash Narredu. Raffaello rallied late to pinch the third slot from Ciplad.

The first race, the 1200 metres Free Radical Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, turned out to be a big shocker as rank outsider San Salvatore literally came from the clouds to win the race at fancy odds. Favourite Multiencrypted who was handily placed did not show any spark and failed to make any progress in the stretch to eventually finish a dismal fifth. San Salvatore came from way off the pace, found all the right spaces along the inside before pouncing on another long shot Fidato to land the spoils. Cherished ran on to take third place.

Narendra Lagad trained Coeur De Lion made a smashing winning debut in the 1200 metres Welcome Cup, a race for two-year-olds. Coeur De Lion showed speed, hitting the front from the word 'go’ and was under no pressure from any of the contestants. The favourite kept increasing the lead in the straight to win by a widening margin of eight lengths. Hooves of Thunder was a disappointing second ahead of Jerusalem.

The heavily supported Bloomsbury from the stables of trainer Altaf Hussain landed a big volume of money that she attracted in the 1200 metres Secret Halo Plate, a race for horses rated 4 to 30. Bloomsbury’s front-running efforts saw her retain the initiative all the way in the straight. Though Demetrius closed with a rush, the front-runner managed to reach the safety of the post sparing a neck at the finish. Noble Lord edged out Waverunner to save place money.
