Prasanna Kumar trained Iron Mirage justified cramped favouritism with a start-to-finish demolition job in the 1400 metres War Hammer Million, the feature event of Sunday’s Bangalore races. Jockey Akshay Kumar merely had to point the colt in the right direction and avoid sightseeing distractions along the way. The rest of the field, still recovering from a season lost to glanders disruptions, looked like students turning up for the final exam after attending only the orientation class.
With most of the three-year-olds having either a solitary run or still searching for their racing identity card, the contest lacked the sharpness expected of a feature event. Iron Mirage bowled along merrily in front while the others chased him with the enthusiasm of government clerks nearing lunch break. By the final furlong, the race had already packed its bags and left. Last start winner Moonveil stayed on for second ahead of Deep Respect, who displayed the kind of improvement normally associated with a parked scooter.

The afternoon largely resembled a procession disguised as a race meeting. Competitive racing was missing without leave, though punters backing the favourites enjoyed a rare stress-free afternoon where blood pressure remained stable and fingernails survived intact. The lop-sided distribution of horses in Bangalore continues to produce these one-act plays where suspense dies earlier than the commentary microphone battery.
Racing, of course, thrives on uncertainty. That delicious chaos is its oxygen. But matters become delightfully complicated when several stables run battalions of horses and even seasoned punters are left wondering whether the trainers themselves know which horse is trying today. Either connections remain gloriously unaware of their own horses’ capabilities or they prefer maintaining monk-like silence while the market confidently walks into walls.
Prasanna Kumar trained Knotty Cruise sprang one such surprise in the 1400 metres Sweet Memories Plate for horses rated 20 to 45. The market behaved as though Tiger Bay merely needed to canter past the winning post to collect the trophy. Punters lined up accordingly while Knotty Cruise floated around at attractive odds.
Anthony Raj sent Knotty Cruise to the front and the filly travelled in permanent cruise control mode throughout. Turf Paradise and Absolute Katrina chased with admirable obedience while Tiger Bay vanished from the frame. The market, naturally, was left looking like a weather department prediction during monsoon season.
Prasanna Kumar completed a double through the three-year-old filly Starzella in the 1400 metres Track Lightning Plate for maidens. Here, thankfully for favourite-backers, the script did not suddenly turn into experimental cinema. Trevor pushed Starzella to the front from the word go and the race instantly surrendered all ambition of becoming competitive entertainment. Stablemate Legacy Field came from another postal code to finish second, six lengths behind, while Cantarina was third and largely unnoticed.

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Regal Reality looked several classes above the opposition in the 1200 metres Aihole Plate for horses rated 60 to 85. The filly, who had won the Guineas 533 days ago and thereafter raced sparingly, returned looking stronger and healthier, the long break clearly agreeing with her far more than it does with most humans.
Held in fourth while NRI Ace set the pace, Regal Reality cruised into contention approaching the final furlong before effortlessly dismissing the opposition. Stellantis and Royal Deccan filled the minor spots while Regal Reality strode away with the authority of someone skipping the queue because she owns the building. In her present form, another victory appears less prediction and more administrative procedure.
A well-executed gamble materialised through Lokanath trained Breeze Buster in the New Market Plate, a race for the basement department of Bangalore racing. Breeze Buster had not won for 813 days, which in racing terms is roughly equivalent to a retired actor suddenly delivering a box-office blockbuster.
The seven-year-old had been contesting stronger company and finally found rivals more suited to his current ambitions. Vaibhav sent Breeze Buster to the front while stablemate Embosom gave token pursuit from nearby. Once the pressure arrived in the straight, Breeze Buster simply shrugged off the challenge and sped away to win by four lengths. Embosom narrowly held second from the late-finishing Sling Shot, whose rally arrived fashionably late, much like Bangalore traffic excuses.
The day concluded in fitting fashion with another bloodless victory. Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Elysium toyed with the opposition in the 1400 metres Racing Patrons Plate for horses rated 40 to 65. Akshay Kumar sat motionless till the bend before asking the favourite to extend. Elysium promptly surged clear of front-running Hazel and widened the margin to six lengths with the ease of someone increasing television volume. Silicon Star finished third while the remainder participated in what can best be described as a supervised exercise session.
