Royal Legacy Masters the Mud to Win Derby

Heavy overnight rain altered the character of the Mysore track, making Saturday’s racing a test of adaptability as much as ability. The softer going, flying clods of grass and kickback made it difficult for horses to make up ground, seemingly favouring those racing near the pace. Several fancied runners struggled to reproduce their expected form, while those better equipped to handle the conditions capitalised on their opportunities.

James McKeown-trained Royal Legacy converted her improving form into a memorable Derby victory, defeating the strongly fancied Stud Poker in the Gr 1 Zavary S Poonawalla Mysore Derby, the star attraction of Saturday’s races.

The daughter of Leitir Mor out of Balmoral Castle had been progressing steadily after winning the Mysore 1000 Guineas and had emerged as a serious contender for the Derby. Available at odds of 8 to 1, she rewarded her supporters with a powerful performance under Akshay Kumar.

Prasanna Kumar-trained Stud Poker enjoyed considerable public support despite questions about his ability to sustain his effort over the mile-and-a-half distance. Suraj Narredu took the favourite to the front, following the horse’s customary racing pattern, while Royal Legacy settled comfortably behind the leader. The remaining runners were spaced out further back.

The advantage enjoyed by the front-runners became apparent on entering the straight. Horses attempting to close from behind struggled to make up ground on the rain-affected surface, while Stud Poker and Royal Legacy pulled away from their rivals.

Stud Poker continued to fight, but Royal Legacy gradually gained the upper hand and surged clear inside the final 100 metres. Akshay had the luxury of standing up in the saddle and waving his whip in celebration before the finish.

Mahogany produced a late flourish to edge out Stud Poker on the post for second place, leaving the favourite to settle for third.

The victory marked McKeown’s third Mysore Derby success and the first for Akshay Kumar, who had already won the Sprinters Cup earlier in the afternoon.

“I went to the race more in expectation than with real hope. But by the final 500 metres, hope had turned into conviction. I could see that the favourite was not kicking away and my filly was travelling well,” said jockey Akshay Kumar, describing how his confidence grew in the closing stages.

Trainer James McKeown said he was confident of a good performance, as Royal Legacy had been improving steadily. “My ward was on the upgrade and I was pretty confident of a good performance,” he said.

Reiko Springs a Sprinters Cup Surprise

The Gr 1 Zavary Poonawalla Sprinters Cup produced a major upset, with S John-trained Reiko nosing out Encino in a thrilling finish. Money Bags, who arrived on the back of six consecutive victories, and two-time Sprinters Cup winner Time And Tide failed to meet expectations.

Money Bags was the strong favourite but appeared to take a false step at the start. Trevor Patel moved him into second behind the front-running Reiko, but the favourite failed to travel with his customary fluency and could not produce the expected acceleration.

Akshay Kumar maintained Reiko’s position at the head of the field. The progeny of Phoenix Tower appeared to handle the softer going well, maintaining his momentum despite veering out of a straight course in the final stages.

Money Bags attempted to stay in contention but weakened to finish third. Encino, a prolific performer from the Adhirajsingh Jodha stable, came charging from behind under Suraj Narredu and mounted a determined challenge. He came tantalisingly close but was denied victory by a whisker.

Akshay later indicated that he had approached the race with more hope than expectation. Reiko’s victory provided the jockey with the first leg of a notable double that he completed in the Derby.

Time And Tide finished well behind the leading runners, producing a performance markedly below the standard established in his previous appearances.

For owner P Arun Kumar, Reiko’s victory was another significant success during a productive spell for his horses. The result also underlined how the rain-affected surface and race positioning could influence the outcome, with the front-runner holding off a late challenge from one of the established performers.

Dyf Wins Stayers Cup for the Second Time

Adhirajsingh Jodha-trained Dyf added another major staying-race victory to his record by winning the Gr 1 Zavary Poonawalla Stayers Cup over 3,000 metres for the second time in his career.

The seven-year-old, partnered by Yash Narredu, continued to demonstrate his effectiveness over long distances. Although Dyf may not be at his peak, his ability to handle the extended trip has enabled him to remain competitive in the staying division.

Racing behind pace-setter Victor Huggins, Dyf moved into contention early in the straight and took command. He then established a useful advantage, which proved sufficient to withstand the late challenge from stablemate and owner-mate Red Bishop.

Red Bishop made up ground in the closing stages but could not bridge the gap, while Dream Alliance finished third.

The victory extended Dyf’s record in staying races and reflected his continued effectiveness over the demanding 3,000-metre distance. Jodha’s handling of the veteran has enabled him to remain competitive and secure another prestigious staying prize.
