With the ever expanding base of got abroad mares, the leading nursery of India, the Usha Stud Farm, has decided to sell about 18 mares in order to create space for the newly acquired ones. The offer by Usha Stud Farm is a good opportunity for smaller stud farms to get successful dam lines to replenish their breeding stock. Usha Stud Farm had a policy of leasing out its fillies for racing purposes only but now with the changed environment, it has decided to benefit from the new import policy of the government of India to upgrade its tock and sell the existing ones due to space constraints.
Managing Director of Usha Stud Farm Ameeta Mehra said that the reason for the offer from the stud farm was because of the influx of mares acquired from abroad. ''With the restriction on import of breeding stock having been eased, there is a big market available for Indian breeders to buy from. Though the mares that have been offered for sale are highly successful, we need space for the mares that we are going to acquire later in the year. The Usha Stud Farm website has listed the mares which are available for sale. It must be noted that only the mares are for sale and not their weanlings which will be sold separately later.’’

All these years, Indian breeders could only buy from Ireland and Goff’s sales had been the biggest attraction. The November pregnant mares’ sales were a big hit with the Indian buyers who brought close to 100 mares in foal to fashionable stallions each year. Now the Government of India has permitted import of horses from other parts of Europe and USA following establishment of protocol for this purpose. The British Bloodstock Marketing had hosted a dinner reception for Indian breeders on the eve of the running of the Gr 1 Kingfisher Bangalore Derby in July. The Tattersalls December sale is sure to have a big Indian presence this year.
The performance of horses which were conceived abroad and born in India has been eye-catching. Jacqueline and Becket were the top horses of last one year (the Indian racing calendar starts from November 31 of the previous year and ends on October 31 of the following year). More and more Indian breeders are forced to take this route following the increased demand for these produce.
Vision of India, Husun, Access All Areas, Regal Grace are among the 17 mares that are for sale. Details of the mares available along with their pedigree can be viewed by clicking on the following link.
